Young Justice should launch in the next few days. Wachter was supposed to write the debut issue, which we had co-plotted, but stuff happens, and that issue isn't quite ready to go, so he asked me to put together a "Zero" issue so the series launches on time.
That issue is just about done and should be up Wednesday or Thursday...and we look forward to your reaction to our YJ revamp.
The Zero issue-"Flying Solo" is a Tim Drake focus issue but sets up events for the first few arcs.
Wachter should have issue #1-"Boys Night Out"-up sometime after that. This issue features the genesis of the team coming together.
So keep your eyes peeled for these issues and prepare to get whelmed...

I liked it. It was pretty much a Detective Comics story, what with it being focused on Tim aside from the very beginning and end, but being a 0 issue that's not a problem really. One thing I noticed:
"No way I am getting out the main doors with those guards on duty, and no way I am getting Steven out through the window unless he is willing, which I highly doubt. But I think I have a solution for both of those problems. Tim makes his way back to the window he entered through, and out into the alley to retrieve a few toys from the stashed backpack."
Was this supposed to be first person or was it just an error? Just wondering.

I liked it and thought it worked exceedingly well for a 0 issue. I look forward to future issues as I am interested in seeing where the story takes us.

To Liquidsword-the whole sequence at the Fourth Street Mission was told form Tim's perspective. He had no one to talk to to explain what he was thinking (i.e. no classic Watson to his Holmes) and it didn't make sense for him to talk to himself on a stealth mission and give his position away, so I went with an interior monologue to tell that part of the issue. Had it been a movie, it would have been a voice over narration by Tim as the action sequence played out, if a true comic narrative caption boxes colored differently to indicate Tim's voice as opposed to the narrator voiced caption boxes elsewhere in the issue setting time and place. If it were a 70's comic it would have been thought balloons.
As for feeling like Detective-part of the reason I wanted to take the title was that I had an agreement in place with someonespc to incorporate Tim into the Bat-Mythos I was building (and a link to another character for something Miller and I were planning for Outsiders), and when someonespc went AWOL I didn't want to lose that opportunity. I wasn't in a position to take the title on solo, and I didn't want to just claim Tim and take him away from a potential Titans sandbox title, so I talked to wachter knowing he had an affinity for this group as well and we agreed to co-write and develop the series. I was going to establish Tim as having been part of the Bat-Mythos in the 5 year gap I have on the title and he was going to graduate into our title. When wachter's absence prevented him form getting #1 done on time and he asked me to do a zero issue, I saw an opportunity to do an issue establishing who Tim was and what his role had been and to build a foundation for him moving forward-so I built it out of where he was in the current Tec storyline-on vacation with his dad in Florida.
To Buck-the Outsiders thing-one of the goals I stated to Miller when I pitched the Outsiders idea to him was to use it as a world building title hence the subtitle The Bronze Age of the Ultimate DCU. We have started planting seeds for that in Outsiders, but its too early to see their fruit just yet in that title. Having Jeff here, well that is a hint of it.
If you look at all the titles I have written (including the CM & Shadowpact fill ins) you should see very strong links between them all. I am very intentionally doing some world building and trying to create an interconnected corner of the Ultimate DCU. I have been working with a few other writers to build on things in their titles as well, and am open to more, with the understanding that wachter, as continuity cop par excellence) prefers those links to be subtle until new series reach issue #6 and are officially in continuity to avoid having the equivalent of "hanging chads" of continuity of writers go AWOL before a title is in continuity. So I hint at some thins unless I have the okay from another writer to state things outright. Dhoward approached me about an Azrael tie in and I was interested but said wait til Tec hits #6, but he seems to be MIA now, so I may not sure that will happen. Bruce's first partner is strongly hinted at, but wachter and I are keeping a lid on that until 'Tec hits #6, just in case things come up, so we maintain some flexibility. Other things, like Jeff's ties to this kid named Virgil, are out there now but remain tenuous, and there may be more than meets the eye there.

A fine issue. I think you should have left Jeff's identity alone with just the hint and lightning as clues. The reveal felt like a hammer. But other than that it was great.
Exceeeeept...look I like the YJ cartoon. But using that stupid running joke for your subtitle? For shame! I am not whelmed at all!

I debated the reveal of Jeff the entire time I was scripting it. I didn't in the first draft, added it in, deleted and finally added it back on the last pass. I guess my final rationale was that I wanted to give readers who had guessed who he was the sense of vindication they were right and to not punish those who hadn't read Outsiders by keeping it shrouded in mystery. Based on your reaction, maybe I should have followed my first instinct not to reveal, but oh well, its done. There's plenty of other mysteries wachter and I will be building to hopefully keep people guessing.
As for the whelmed meme, well wachter suggested it, but I gleefully agreed, so we can both take equal parts of the blame...or credit....depending on your POV.

I really liked it.
Like others have said, this felt like an issue of Detective Comics, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The two of you clearly have a story to tell, yet certain things made you had to put this up. I've been there myself. But this was definitely a great teaser into Robin's story. And I liked the little hints into the deeper Bat-Family stuff that I know, but the rest of the world doesn't.
And I have to agree with the general trend about the Jeff's reveal. I picked up on it due to a few hints here and there, but I don't think it needed the big reveal at the end. That may be just my personal preference though.
But, really great issue. Can't wait for the proper #1 next month.

Just as an FYI to readers, the last scene in the Gotham church serving as the epilogue has been removed due to a miscommunication during the claims process, so when moving forward in the series, please forget it was there initially. I may add a new epilogue once I get in touch with wachter and we figure things out. Sorry for the confusion, but please keep reading.

I like the idea of a zero issue when it's done right and this one was. You took an established hero and shown how he can do stuff on his own. Which is essentially what you want to do with a teenage superhero comic. He did pretty well. You established his strengths and weaknesses very well in this comic. How he deals with others should be interesting. The scene at the beginning with Psimon, Gizmo, and Mammoth established all the characters pretty well and help set up what's gonna be going on. I loved the Brother Blood nod. Overall a good introduction to one character that you don't have to focus on when you have the other ones show up who are less developed. I look forward to reading this take on the idea.

I restored the original epilogue with corrections to reflect the final resolution of the Anarky claim miscommunication. It sets up the events of Young Justice #1.

Finally got around to reading this. I told myself I wouldn't review a series unless I read about an arc or so in, which is why it's taking me awhile to review other stories. Buuut, I saw that this one only had one issue so I decided to just read what was there yesterday which leads to this review.
I thought it was great, though. Nice start. And yeah, like the others said it is more of a Tim story but since it was issue 0 I didn't really expect it to have the full team or anything. I really like how you portray Tim, though, and like the links to your other work, Detective Comics. It sets up a nice sense of continuity between the two series. I cannot wait to see more from you and Wachter on this series that is already up to a good start.

Great Scott! What's that! Wachter and MRP release a combined title and it's under 3000 words?!?!?!
That's right folks. Your first and last (not counting issue 3) small issue from the likes of the Ulti-Monitor and the Goddamn Stranger. In order to better hold your attention and to let you sit down and read it in one go, the two of us thought it best to break Boys Night Out into a two parter instead of it's original One and Done format.
Yes yes... No need to thank us, readers. We are quite aware of how massive our issues (both figuratively and literally) are.
Enjoy reading the meeting of the first two founders of Young Justice and the start of a glorious Red and Blue Bromance for the ages. It only gets better from here on out.

Official #1 was good. Robin was suitably bad-ass. Nice to see the blurry-Blue in business.
Cool cool.

I just read the first issue. Was really great. Had some nice Robin action and I like this Blue guy. It also ended on a deliciously evil cliffhanger. Can't wait to read the next issue!

Well if you really want to know I guess you could check who Wachter has claimed for the series. Or you could, like me, avoid reading the claims list so that you are genuinely surprised when the other members come up in the series.

I will quote myself quoting my avatar quoting Kurt Busiek...wait and see. I will just say this...the YJ claim list will only give you part of the big picture...my Uncle Tony (and you need to say that with a very thick Brooklyn and Italian accent) has been busy brokering certain deals for us (so if you see any list members walking with casts, just ignore them or Uncle Tony might visit you next)...however, if you read the zero issue you might get clues as to two eventual members...but those two do appear on the claims list...
Hmmm maybe we need more villains too...let me give Uncle Tony a call...
RING
"Happy Slumber Funeral Home, You stab 'em, we slab 'em, Tony speaking hows can weeze help[ you?"
"Uncle Tony!"
"MRP!, who can I do you for today...."
