Chapter I
At Another War's End
*
The stories say that once there was a man, a brave man who could overcome fear in the face of greatest adversity. In a time when rage a fear ran free, this man was called upon, brought from the darkest depths of his home, and given not only a mission, but a duty and a brotherhood, and he, along with his brothers at his side, set out to end a war that began so long ago. From there, a time of peace reigned supreme under the Guardians of the Galaxy.
But this time of peace, twas not to last, for soon a yellow adversary had rained down upon the universe and the domination of all was upon us. It was in these darkest of times that the true colors of the Green Lantern Corps were to ring true.
It was from planet to planet, galaxy to galaxy, that this war rang out, reaching to the furthest reaches of the Universe, some battles reaching further than even the guardians knew. And it was during these battles that Hal Jordan, the messiah of the Green Lanterns, rose up and led a new legion of heroes against the Dominators, an enemy never thought to be what it truly became.
And on the planet of Ranx, Hal Jordan and his comrade in arms, Thaal Sinestro, led thousands of Green Lanterns against a hoard of Dominators so mighty, that only mere hundreds escaped the fiasco alive. It was during this battle that the mightiest of the Lanterns fell.
As Hal Jordan stood still and silent on a sunny, bloody day at the height of the tallest tower of Ranx, he prepared his troops for the final battle in the War of Domination. He spoke to his troops, he lifted their hearts, and he rode in to battle at the front of the pack, his green swords and shields ablaze. And together, with the might of thousands, they ran light into the hearts of the evil Dominators that had ruined the universe they so loved.
And it was in these last, desperate moments that Hal Jordan ordered a full-scale retreat of his army and, for the first time in his career as a Lantern, felt fear. Crippling, unloving fear. And there was a flash of yellow. Thaal Sinestro watched as the yellow engulfed the large planet and the Dominators fell.
When Sinestro landed on the planet in the aftermath, he found that nothing had survived that yellow flash--save a sole, yellow ring, with the words "Metu Potentia" scribed into the underside. To honor his brother's sacrifice, Sinestro, to this day, wears the Yellow Ring as a token of gratitude for all the Corps to look to. Or so, that's the way the story is told.
*
The room is large, neverending, some would say. The ceiling expanding into the vast systems above, the bright, bold stars raining radiant light down upon those present in the Chambers of the Guardians of the Universe. Their blue skin bold and clear in this daring dawn of a new era.
"You must listen to me, great Guardians of the Universe, fore without Hal Jordan, yet another war shall come. At our homes, in our open skies we have been attacked by the monstrosities that are the Yellow Lantern Corps--a new breed of vile, evil creatures. Just like those Lanterns of Red fed from the red seas of rage, so do these creatures from the seas of fear. And now we see ourselves on the brink of yet another war, and without our hero that has stopped the last two." Thaal Sinestro's voice rings loud in the closed yet open, endless chambers of the Guardians. They sit in a circle, encompassing the arena and starring down upon the Lantern from every angel. Sinestro cares not about many of the Guardians, he instead addresses the on highest above, and at what best can be described as the center--Apa Ali Apsa.
"You are the greatest of our Corps of Lanterns Green, Thaal Sinestro, but your protests fall on deaf ears. Excuse me in using your own words against you, but it was you yourself which brought the story of Hal Jordan's brave sacrifice to us. Could it be that this story is not true? Do you know something of the Great Lantern's demise that we, as the allknowers, do not?" During the Four Years War against the Dominators, Hal Jordan and Thaal Sinestro not only turned the tides of war again and again, but also turned the tide of Universal Politics, changing the council of Guardians from that of an Oligarchy to that of a Democracy, where one Guardian is elected leader, and he takes the name Apa ali Apsa--"Leader of the Guardians."
"I am not privy to any knowledge that you find yourselves lacking, Master Apa Ali, but instead I am privy to faith and hope--emotions you have long since abandoned. It is through this faith," Sinestro holds his left hand up so that all can bare witness to the awesome sight of the Yellow Ring. "And through this ring, that I will find Hal Jordan and demolish the rumored Yellow Lanterns, my masters."
"What is it that you ask of us, Thaal Sinestro? You find yourself within the ability to find the Lantern, why have you come to us instead of merely finding the Lantern on your own? Hal Jordan would be forever grateful, we assume." Apa Ali Apsa's voice booms through the endless halls of the Citadel of the Guardians, placed at the center of the grandest city of Oa.
"I ask of you to allow me to form a squadron of the best and brightest Lanterns--Lanterns who face Atrocitus head-on and can still tell the tales; Lanterns who fought by Jordan's side against the yellow fangs of the Dominators--I ask of you to allow me to choose and train a new Lantern of my choosing--"
"That is enough, Thaal Sinestro. We have just incorporated almost five-thousand new Lanterns into the Corps in the almost year following the end of the war and the death of Jordan--we can barely train them, and you wish us to grant you yet another ring to create a new barer in an untrained army we can barely keep ahold of?"
"I do indeed, Master Apa Ali, for it is with this new Lanterns, that I will find myself capable of retaining the greatest Green Lantern who ever lived."
"And where, might I ask, would you find this Lantern?" A stark silence engulfs the audience of one as he hesitates to respond. But he is not penalized, as being the greatest of the Greens has its perks after all.
"Earth." And now that silence expands and consumes the Citadel of the Guardians. One by one they close their eyes, looking out into the endless night sky at the radiant stars above.
"From the same Earth that our fallen messiah hails from? From the same Earth that our greatest enemy hails from? That Earth?"
"Also the Earth which produced John Stewart, the leader of your armies. And Superman, the last son of Krpyton. And so, so many more. Earth is the most emotional place in all the universe, and it is here that I will find my recruit." And silence covers the room, each of the dozens of floating blue men and women resting above Thaal Sinestro, the Greatest Green Lantern. They converse, not verbally, but mentally, as they reach a decision--what decision, is unknown, until the great Apa Ali Apsa speaks:
"Take your ring, Thaal Sinestro, and find us a new messiah." With a flick of his wrist, a Green Lantern Ring flies from the endless void of stars above into the hand of Sinestro. I look of shock, twisted with that of confidence, runs across the great man's face.
"Thank you, my Guardians, and I promise that this man will have such power as you yourselves." With those words, the great Sinestro hovers from the Citadel and begins his quest for the greatest Green of them all...
*
His green-clad feet hit the rough soil hard as he comes from space at three-hundred miles per hour. His eyes search the barren landscape for anyone anywhere. No enemies. No assaulters. No assailants. Thaal Sinestro has landed on the Planet Earth--home of the one and only Hal Jordan. He takes a step forward as the wind whips around the unpopulated area. A large, black-grey strip cuts through the Earth, weaving its way across the sullen landscape.
"And what on Earth is this...?" Sinestro asks himself as he reaches down to touch the Earth. "It seems to be made of...tar? These Earthlings use the precious tar to carve a design in their Earth? I must see it all." Just before Sinestro can lift into the air to follow the stripe of grey, he hears a loud, hounding noise. Almost immediately, he turns and generates a shield around his body of radiant green. Soft light rises from the side of a hill. "Who goes there?!" Sinestro yells, readying himself for an assault. A small, green monster rides out of the distance, soaring for Sinestro at alarming rates. "What in Krogar's Great Name is this..." But before Sinestro can have another glance, the monster disappears, racing past him. With a shrug of his shoulders, Sinestro lifts into the sky on a search for a new Lantern.
*
Black monuments rise high into the skies--peaks and spires cutting through the dense smog and the hapless clouds as they rise ever so slightly into darkening sky--their eyes made of glass, their teeth of iron. A sole figure, encased in a soft, green radiance descends upon the city, his speed higher than that of any monster on the strips.
As he looks down at the city below him, he finds thousands of the little monsters, hundreds of a bigger variety, coursing across similarly black-grey strips, coursing through the city as blood does veins through your body. Men and women stumble across these streets, pops, bangs and booms can be heard from miles away and Sinestro cannot help but to understand where he is or what is happening. How could such a great Lantern come from such a horrible existence?
Sinestro, removing his cloak of green, lands on the strips, just out of view of all the humans. He takes small strides, masking himself to look just as the humans look, turning his pink skin pale, his green clue to blue and white. His stride stays steady and confident.
He looks upon the passers-by, with their pants sagging low and their bennies riding tight--Sinestro lets leave a soft sigh. "Where shall the next Jordan be?" He wonders to himself as he wanders on down the path to salvation.
*
His steps hit the ground softly with each passing moment, his breath growing colder and colder as the sun comes down further and further, the bright, powerful, yellow sun. A small man walks by, his eyes wide at Sinestro, his jaw hanging open. He tugs at the hand of a woman he walks beside. "Mommy, Mommy! That man is pink!" He points at Sinestro. Can he see through the disguise? Can everyone? She turns and just looks at him before she looks to the man, her son, and scolds him.
"It isn't nice to say things like that about people, son!" She looks up at Sinestro. "I'm sorry, he's just a child." With a smile and a wave, she is gone, disappearing into the mass that is the human population. Nameless. Faceless.
*
Loud music bursts through the doors of a small neighborhood tavern, not unlike the one on Oa. Shouts and screams come from within and Sinestro sprints into the structure to discover the reason why, only to see hundreds of bodies moving against each other and gyrating in forms that Sinestro has never seen outside of the mating process. One man catches his eye in particular:
He sits alone, at a small table high up, his eyes staring at a piece of parchment which he is inscribing on. Every so often, he stops to drink an entire glass of some strange Earthly liquid. The smell is putrid, but everyone seems to enjoy the taste enough that it changes how they act.
Sinestro walks over slowly before realizing that this Earthling may have no reason to speak with him. Sinestro whispers softly to his ring "Make me the most desirable form." And before his own eyes, Sinestro turns from a human male, into something else, something stunning. His hair lengthens and turns blonde. His blue jeans turn into a tight pencil skirt. His shirt becomes thin and small, barely covering his stomach. His breasts enlarge, pulling his shirt up to barely cover them. His eyes become sharp and blue. He has become the most desirable thing on the Earth--a human female.
With a new confidence in approaching this potential candidate, Sinestro, in his new body, strides towards this man. He takes a seat across from him, laying his head on his hand and plastering a smile to his face. "What's your name, hun?" He looks up, his long black hair falling down over his eyes, making the perfectly stunning blue hard to see.
"Kyle." With that, he turns his attention back to the parchment. What can Sinestro do to cgain this man's attention?
"I see you're here alone?"
"I am." He says, not even bothering to look up. He takes another shot, becoming even more distant from Sinestro's reach. This is it. One more try and then this man will surely walk away.
"Do you wanna see a trick?" This gains his interest as Kyle turns his attention towards Sinestro.
"Wow me, why don't you?" With a cocky grin on his face, Sinestro stands.
"Now." He whispers into his ring and, within seconds, his Earthly appearance changes into that of his pink, foreign, alien appearance. "Will you talk to me now?" His Green Lantern uniform fitting tight over him, he rises into the air. The music stops and the screams become much, much worse as the humans sprint off in every direction.
"God, I've had toon much to drink." Closing the parchment pad, Kyle stands up and begins to walk away.
"Are you not afraid, Kyle?" Kyle looks back, looking Sinestro straight in the eye, anger glazing his gaze--but not fear.
"Why would I be afraid of my own delusions?" Sinestro looks down at the ring in his palm.
"I think this is yours." Holding the ring out towards Kyle, the soft voice of the ring calls out--
"Kyle Rayner of Earth--you have the ability to overcome great fear. You are the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814."
The ring flies from Sinestro's grasp and onto Kyle's hand. In blind rage, Kyle attempts to throw the ring off, but fails. Slowly, a soft, radiant green light begins to envelope him. "What are you doing to me?!"
"Think of something, Kyle Rayner! How can you defend yourself?!" And in seconds, Kyle is envelope with a metallic suit of green armor, staring down Sinestro with might unmatched.
"Get away from me!" With a swift punch, Sinestro is sent flying through the wall of the building and into the next. What has he done?
