Ultimate Brave and the Bold #1
Blue and Gold, Together Again
The sounds exploding from the speakers had faded to a dull sort of white noise in Booster’s ears. He sat reclining in a formfitting sofa that spanned a massive room with only one other occupant. The sofa was probably more expensive than most people’s cars. Hell, practically everything in the room was worth more than most made in a year. One never wanted for comfort and luxury while in Ted’s presence. Strangely, Booster, used to so much more yet at ease in far less, felt out of place. Not something he could have said a decade ago. Probably not something he could have admitted three years ago at most.
Lazily he fiddled with the ring around his finger. The strange golden L looked as awkward as he felt despite the fact he had earned it this time around. He was a Legionnaire. Wasn’t sure which Legion but they had inducted him. Forgave him for past mistakes. They recognized him as a hero, just as the League, or rather Leagues, had. Of America, International, Unlimited, even Dark for one misadventure. Quite vetted for this reality on the eve of heroes and villains.
But there was no League here. Not yet. And given the state of its heroes, he wasn’t quite sure if it would unite at all. Booster had to make do with what he had on hand. It was more difficult than he thought. He had been careful so long… yet after Barry. To hell with being careful. Booster had resorted to the one man he knew would help him without doubt… providing it wasn’t some antimatter universe.
“Funny that you mention Superman,” Ted was saying on the TV, looking rugged handsome and disheveled. Every bit the eccentric genius billionaire he intended to portray. That he was here. “The sort of destruction he seems to cause on a biweekly basis is what inspired me to get others to back this project.”
“You can’t-“
“Or rather Lex Luther really,” he went on, all but ignoring the reporter. “Always picking up the blocks the Man of Steel knocks down. Ready with a helping hand and generous wallet to right the rights Superman leaves in his wake.” The smirk on Ted’s lips correctly portrayed his amusement at his wordplay.
The image froze on the outraged reporter’s face. “I love that part.”
“I did tell you that Luther is one of the most diabolical and evil minds in all of time and space, right?” Booster had to ask.
Ted, perched on the edge of his seat, turned that very same smirk that had been on the screen moments ago on his friend. “Of course, Carter. ‘Luther is an evil bastard that you need to stay far, far away from,’ rings a bell.” That cocky accent ate at Booster. “You warn me time and time again that he’s waiting in the wings to take over my company the second it falters.”
A chime sounded behind them.
“Door, sirs.” A high pitched, artificial voice that Booster knew as well as his own hastened to add.
“Answer it, Skeets,” ordered Ted as he hit play. Had to be the narcissistic jackass even here, in the heart of Brave and the Bold and Kord Electronics.
The men were technically in the green room for the heroes of Brave and the Bold but few could stomach being with Ted who was effectively their boss, rival, and lead benefactor for any prolonged periods of relaxation time. Booster had heard the whispers. They called the far too extravagant waiting place The Blue and Gold Room. Not many came in. All knocked.
Light steps got ever closer to the sofa. It said nothing. Didn’t remark on anything. The handful of staff with this level of clearance had been paid for their silence and had signed legally binding contracts relating to what they could say. Unfortunately, this knowledge didn’t prepare Booster for the lovely young woman coming around the back of the piece of expensive furniture to hand Ted a manila folder full of info Ted acted like it would be a bother to read and steaming cup of coffee. Surreal.
“Shouldn’t that be tea?” Booster joked to hide his surprise. It was a source of never ending amusement to him that Ted and Dan hailed from across the pond in this timeline. Such a strange, random change.
“That’s offensive,” fired Ted back in return. “I hate tea before crime fighting. Doesn’t agree with the stomach.”
To her credit, the young woman didn’t laugh. She handed him what he needed and waited a fraction of a second to see if she’d be needed for anything else. Booster tried not to stare too hard at her. He had thought this timeline would stop surprising him. . . that he had gotten a handle at controlling his reactions but this… this… this was actually probable now that he took the time to think of it. All he could see from this angle was her slender frame. Her short black hair hid any other features. Not that it mattered. Booster recognized her. Knew her to not just have Asian heritage but rather Korean ancestry. Didn’t need to see her face a second time to confirm his suspicion.
“Thank you, Linda,” Ted sipped at the coffee with a satisfied smile, tossing the folder onto the cushion beside him. “That’ll be all.”
The billionaire watched her go as he thought he should, never mind she was at least six years his younger. There was a hint of lust in his eyes when he twisted in his seat to continue watching her. He waited until she was nearly at the door, gaze traveling up the pantyhose covered legs. Just loud enough for her to overhear, he stage whispered to Booster. “That woman is destined to be in front of the camera. . .”
Linda turned her head a fraction and hesitated. Enough so that Booster could see the roll of her eyes. Then she closed the door behind her and Skeets locked it.
“. . . preferably the one in my bedroom,” finished the Blue Beetle with a laugh.
“Don’t go there.”
It was a mistake the second the words left his mouth. Ted had a sixth sense about these things. Knew every hitch in Booster’s voice that told him the man from the future had knowledge he could use. “Oh? Who is she? She meta too? Marry one? Is she my future first and third wife and potential mother of my bastard children?”
“Don’t go there either.”
“You’re no fun like this. Fine, can I at least ask if it was right of me to accept her application? She had quite the resume. It’d be a shame to ruin such a promising future based on a misunderstanding of what you said or did not say.”
Booster’s mouth worked a few seconds without any actual sound coming from him. Finally, with a glance at the door for reassurance, he spoke grudgingly. “You were right. She’s destined to be in front of the camera.”
“Good. She has just the look we were looking for a host for the Podcasts.”
“Didn’t we already have one? What’s his face the guy –“
“Carter…” gone was the good humor and playact. Ted’s voice had all the warmth of a black hole. “I wasn’t kidding when I said Superman was the inspiration. Charlton died weeks ago in Metropolis because of that hero’s actions. Crushed under so much rubble.” Beetle’s hands clenched into fists. “We won’t have that here. Our heroes will be held accountable. They’ll have to think. They’ll have to be careful. And if they can’t save someone, the whole world will know about it.
Talk about pressure, Booster would have said in times past. Now he could only nod. Moments like these proved that he was right to bet on Ted like always. Alternate universe or wrong timeline or not. Ted was destined to be a hero.

Locker room. First live show about to be underway. Booster was surprised to find his stomach filled with butterflies. Football star, professional gambler, media-whore, saved earth more than once, and saved the universe at least twice and yet he was terrified of live television. What if he dropped the f-bomb? He recalled saying that once not so long ago when Maxima used a car-door like a bat against him. When they got back, he’d have to update Skeets programming to censor certain words. Wasn’t enough to prevent the public from knowing he truly had knowledge of the future. He had to protect himself from the FCC.
One look at Ted slipping on his mask and all the tension left Booster. Ted was here. This is what the other man had been waiting for. A chance to show the world what a hero could be. What a hero should be. He would do his mentor’s mantle justice this day.
Booster didn’t need to think of saving time and space to relax. Just needed to remember Ted. Remember that Blue and Gold was together again.
“Blue… I… uh… I want you know that I’m proud to be fighting at your side again.”
The mask, different than any other Booster had seen before, didn’t quite hide the wry lift of the brow. “What happened the last time?”
“You died.”
“Before that?”
“Died.”
“Oh.”
“Then before that I had to send you back in time to die again after saving you.”
“You really need to work on your pep talks, Booster…”
“And the time before that you died. And before that you tried to sleep with me.”
“Wait… What?”
“Gender bending universe. It was totally cool. . . Though I was a bit jealous you had bigger breasts than me.”
A long pause. “Did you?”
“Of course not. Pretty sure that’d be against the bro-code,” answered Booster a little too smoothly for Ted’s tastes.
There was another long silence, both men walking with a purpose towards the hangar with Ted’s Bug. Booster wouldn’t need it but it did provide a nice starting point to fly off into the wild blue yonder of Seigelville. He could do this. They could do this. Blue and Gold forever.

Baby-bugs swarmed about the getaway car. Más y Menos, hands clasped, dashed after it with speed not seen since the Flash. So fast, if not for the special cameras inside the baby-bugs, families all across America wouldn’t be able to properly appreciate the chase. The twin speedsters would probably ruin every live episode until the criminal element upped their game. Bit difficult beat them to a save when they were already back to the station by the time you got your boots on.
In fast pursuit close behind them, Booster knew Ted had to be cursing Infinity Entertainment’s duo. There had been much debate on the merits of a speedster. Given the Flashes, super-speed was a tad iconic in the States. Many execs had pushed their entry because of this fact. Not to mention they added a bit of flavor to the show. Unfortunately, the others just couldn’t keep up. They were too quick, too powerful.
When the other heroes had finally shown up on scene, the cameras had been rolling for five minutes. The twins had gone against orders – for the right or wrong reasons, Booster did not know – and rescued the hostages from the bank heist before the others could get into position. In the intervening seconds between 1 and 300, the red/white duo had disarmed a handful of bombs by imploding them, returned more cash than most people can count in the same amount of time, and started the chase.
Helicopters chopped the air above, cameras focusing on the armored car and the blurs chasing it. Más y Menos were being very careful. Instead of focusing on the vehicle, they had cleared the traffic of all bystanders and as many other cars as they could as far as the interstate. A little bit of extra hassle but it got them numerous points leading Booster to believe they were following their owner’s orders to put on a show, not trying to be heroes. They could have put a hand through the window of the armored car at any time and ended it.
An invisible figure dropped in on the fleeing vehicle. Magnetic boots clamped onto the roof as it crawled across the roof surface. A flash of metal pierced Booster’s goggles and he saw Cheshire reverse her grip, her intent to smash through the window. He wondered at that thought. She didn’t have powers as far as he knew. What could she do against…
Her hand, only seen by Booster, Skeets, and the Baby-bugs, went through the glass, somehow solidifying on the other side to sucker punch the driver. The vehicle swerved to the right severely, crashing through the boundary with a streaming strand of cement. Shaken, Cheshire lost her grip, flipping backwards off the top, her scream of pain reaching his ears as she seeming scraped through the inside of the car.
Más, or was it Menos, hesitated for all of a nanosecond before spinning and launching his brother like a boomerang to catch Cheshire before the viewers at home could find out if she’d land on her feet. The other twin stumbled to a halt, watching the car and then Booster and Beetle zoom past. They were out of the chase until they could get back together.
Up ahead, Booster’s goggles locked in on a lone figure on a long stretch of empty highway. Dark-skinned, strange hair, he was unfamiliar to the man from the future and yet despite his apparent youth, he stood there never faltering as he erected a barrier of water to stop the crooks.
In his ear, he expected to hear Ted’s orders to make the stop now, to take points and the save away from Kal. Yet, his friend surprised him. “Money lane.”
Money lane was the term Ted used to dictate teamwork with rivals. With it being the first episode and the twins having already screwed things up, he must have wanted to try to show off all the heroes as much as he could. To better strike fear and terror into the criminal element, Booster hoped.
Booster fired energy beams at the armored car from the left, just barely missing while Ted did the same on the right in his Bug. The team herded the vehicle straight towards Kaldur, waiting for the instant it would crash against the watery wall. There wasn’t a crushing sound when it finally hit. Instead it stretched like being dragged through mud, slowing down until it flipped over on its top for Kal to catch it in his iron grip.
The golden clad hero joined the young man in keeping the vehicle aloft while Blue Beetle hovered above in his Bug, a laser cutter providing an opening for the heroes to finally get inside. Just then, the doors opened and three terrified figures with guns crawled out deeply confused. Straining against the weight, Kal still managed to mutter to Booster. “Go. . . I got this.”
But before he could think of releasing his grip, the three had been captured. Swooping in on her glider in the eleventh hour came Batwoman to save the day after all the other heroes had done the work. Two unbreakable bolas shot out forth from her glider to wrap about the bank robbers perfectly. An electric shock ran through the chord for good measure to stun the crooks. For the third, as he raised his gun, Kate turned a right hook that would make most universes’ Batman proud on his jaw with a jump down from the sky.
Figures.
Booster watched Batwoman pose beside the captured criminals as cameras flashed, wondering if the green eyed monster had hold of him or if it was just an effect of his goggles. Oh well. Not bad for a first episode. No injuries. No serious collateral damage. He could only hope the rest of the season would be this easy but in his heart he knew that to be misplaced.
Skeets had chosen Seigelville for a reason.
If he said the city would be important, that there would be a danger only heroes could solve, then there would be. And it’d be something so horrible Booster didn’t dare try to guess.
