Interlude – A night in space
(Takes place between issue two and three)
Laura sat watching the television. Jay had dropped her off two hours ago and like usual she had nothing to do. Taking another sip from her wine filled glass Laura let out a sigh as she flipped through the channels.
Days like this make me miss the old patrols through Iraq. Thought Laura.
Minutes turned to hours as she found herself lost in a drunken stupor as the T.V. continued to be switched between channels.
Well if I’m going to be bored I might as well learn something.
Heading back a few channels she put down the remote and settled on a show called ‘The many wonders of the stars.’ The host of the show looked like your stereotypical scientist. Which annoyed Laura but she couldn’t think of a good reason why it did. He began talking about the death of a star and the process involved, most of it went over Laura’s head. Behind the host a cgi backdrop of space appeared, the numerous stars twinkled and a few of the planets could be seen spinning. As the sun came into focus in the background the host began to show what would happen if our sun died.
I wonder….
Laura lifted herself off her chair and walked over to the window, her wine glass in hand. Looking up at the stars in the sky she took another sip from her glass and placed it down on a nearby table. Walking over to her front door Laura grabbed her favourite red fleece and put on a pair of old trainers before walking outside, locking the door behind her.
The wind blew Laura’s long white hair, numerous strands covering her face.
Not even thirty.
Brushing her hair behind her ears Laura looked around. It was quite late so the street was quiet, not that it mattered since from what Laura had heard from her friends in intelligence her first public mission as Silver Sorceress wasn’t far off. Laura began to rise from the ground slowly.
Heh. This’ll be the first time I’ve ever flown drunk, shouldn’t be too hard.
Flying upwards at a steady pace it wasn’t long till Laura was high above the ground, a circular blue glow surrounding her which kept her warm and able to breathe this high up. Having a quick look down it was hard for her to make out the city below.
Okay. This is about as high as I’ve ever been. Let’s see how far I can go.
Hesitating for a moment Laura turned and flew higher and higher, faster and faster as the excitement of what she was doing fuelled her further. Eventually Laura stopped a smile covering her face. She knew what would be behind her when she turned around but it didn’t prepare her for the sight as her eyes widened with joy.
I’ll need to bring the guys up here! It’ll blow Jay’s mind!
Laura floated in place, admiring the Earth for what seemed like an eternity when suddenly a thought popped into her head. Looking behind her she could see the moon in the distance, although various junk floated between them, Laura didn’t notice her eyes captivated by the giant rock and with a nothing more than a deep breathe she was off. Weaving in and out of the space junk like a child at play laughing as she did so.
Sitting contently, her knees tucked into her chest with her arms wrapped around them, upon the moon’s surface Laura resumed her watch over Earth.
This feeling…..Last time I felt like this was just after I got these powers. That feeling of something new, something different, it’s why I joined the army, why I joined the Heracles project.
After an hour Laura felt herself dozing off. Thinking that it must be late she reluctantly raised herself from the moon’s surface and began the journey back home wondering how far she would go next time.
