"Betty, tell me you have Ms. Black on satellite."
Mark Shaw steered his silver rental car around the corner, trying to keep up with the green car Vera Black had stolen ten minutes ago. after their case had begun on foot, Vera had wasted no time running up to the car and holding her pistol to the driver's head. She had thrown the woman out of the car and taken off. Lucky for Shaw, he was within running distance of his own rental car, and had managed to get it off and running before Vera could drive her way out of the Scottish costal town of Ullapool. Now, Shaw was trying desperately to keep pace with Vera's car as she raced south on A835.
"Damn Mark," said Bad Betty via their satellite link, "I may be good, but I can't work miracles here. It isn't like I am on my full set-up at home. I am doing everything I can from my laptop here in a cyber-cafe in London. It isn't like i am not the best there is, but I am having a hard enough time just trying to intercept all the cell phone calls from the people on the highway going to the police. Otherwise you would have a whole shitload of law enforcement on your tale right now. You have her still in your sights, don't you?"
Shaw swerved to avoid an on-coming car as he attempted to gain precious yards closer.
"Yeah, I still can see her. But she is a damn good offensive driver. This road is quite busy, and I am trying to avoid some nasty car accident involving civilians."
"Maybe she is just really excited to get to Loch Ness and look for the monster?" commented Bad Betty, trying to add some brevity to the situation.
Shaw scoffed, "yeah, I am sure that is it..."
As Manhunter watched, Vera pulled into the oncoming lane, with a blue old car ahead of her in the lane she just pulled from. She pulled up so that the front of her car was near the back right wheel of the blue car. Then she swerve into the car. The driver lost control of the car, as it went into a small spin towards the center of the road. Vera pulled her car to the right, driving off briefly into the field next to the road, before pulling back onto the asphalt, ahead of the accident she created. Meanwhile, the blue car she struck stopped in the center of the road, almost vertical, and was promptly struck in the rear by an oncoming car.
"Betty, patch into the police line and tell them there is a multi-car accident on A835, just outside of Braemore."
"On it boss, next time, make sure your prey steals a car with On Star so I can just hack in and turn off her ignition, makes things a lot easier..."
"I will keep that in mind."
Shaw noticed Vera's stolen car slowing down. The vehicle started to sputter.
"Out of gas?" mumbled Shaw to himself. Apparently, he had got lucky, as the car Vera had stolen did not have a full tank as his rental did.
Manhunter watched as Vera's car pull off the road, and plowed into a nearby field. She spun the car to the side as Shaw pulled his car off the road aw well. He noticed Vera sliding over into the passenger seat, opening the door. Manhunter didn't want her to escape for the chase to continue, so he braced himself and plowed his vehicle into the back of Vera's car.
Vera's car spun around as Manhunter's vehicle struck it. Vera was pushed backwards, back into the driver's seat. Her head and back struck the driver side door hard. The cars came to rest side by side to each other , facing opposite directions.
Unable to get out his own blocked side, Shaw unbuckled his safety belt and moved into the passenger seat, opening the door. He grabbed his batons from the floor of the vehicle as he got outside. He was briefly shaky from the collision, but quickly gained his composure and moved around the back of the car towards the front of Vera's smashed car. Suddenly a shot burst through the front window of the red car. Then another through both the driver window of the red car, and back window of his rental. Manhunter slid slow on the side of his car to protect himself.
"Whoever the bloody frack you are," shouted Vera from inside her car, "you better back off or I will fill you full of holes."
"I don't think so sweetheart" replied Manhunter. Shaw pushed a button on each of his batons, charging them with electromagnetic energy. He then pressed the batons against the back of his car and let the charge go. Thanks to his special insulated gloves, he felt no effect as the electricity coursed through his car into the car butted up against it, and into Vera as she still leaned against the metal of the driver side door. Vera screamed before she lapsed into unconsciousness.
"Betty, you still with me?" asked Manhunter as he stood up and walked towards the passenger side of Vera's car.
"Yeah. I heard a crash and some shots. You get your girl?"
Manhunter nodded to himself as he opened the passenger side door of the car to see vera Black slumped against the driver side door.
"I got her. Hopefully I didn't do too much damage to this rental so I can get it running and get back to a city."
"Hopefully," said Betty, "Nice job taking her down. I have to temper your good news with some bad though. You aren't gonna like it..."
"Shit," said Mark, "what now?"
"I had a special program embedded into some government software that is set to flag me if certain red light words set it off. It just went off. It seems there has been a break-out at Eagles Point Penitentiary*. A couple of prisoners escape in a bloody way. Guess who was amongst the escapees?"
(*You did read 'Ultimate Brave and the Bold #3' didn't you?)
Manhunter closed his eyes and shook his head, "Menagerie?"
"Yeah boss, she is out and on the run..."
Manhunter sighed, "Frack. Well, it is a good thing I got my hands on Ms. Black here. With Coldcast dead and Menagerie on the run, she may be the only link I have to her brother now..."
