New School pt. 2
Zatanna stood in amazement at what was standing in front of her. Whoever this Phantom Stanger was had just appeared out of thin air and into her dorm room.
"What do you mean my father needs my help he's supposed to be in Vegas he has a show tonight?" she said circling around the Phantom Stranger.
"Your father has hidden the truth from you for too long. John Zatara is one of the most powerful mystic in the universe. There are those out there that wish to take that from him and I'm afraid someone is close to doing that. If they succeed all could be lost for humanity." Stranger said with a dire tone. Zatanna still in awe tried to form some sort of coherent thought but couldn't. "We must go now time is of the essence." As he pointed to the mirror Julie had been using a few minutes prior.
“Huh? You do realize that is a mirror, don't you?” Zatanna walked over and looked back with a bewildered look on her face. The Phantom Stranger touched the mirror and the glass began to ripple. “Whoa.”
"Go through the mirror and I will explain everything to you.” His voiced faded away as he evaporated into the air. Zatanna still at a loss; touched the glass and watched as ripples flowed through the glass. She felt a tickle flow through her body, she was hesitant but she wanted answers and wanted to save her dad if he really was in danger. She closed her eyes and stepped though the mirror. As she did the mirror resolidified and Julie snapped out of the spell.
"This is a good eggro..." Julie realized Zatanna had vanished. She set the egg roll down and looked around the room. "Zee?"

As Zatanna stepped out through another mirror, she noticed she stumbled into a darkened abandoned study. She looked around at the stacks of books lying around and bookcases that lined the walls full of thick old books. Paintings hung on the wall that had been collecting dust for what seemed like ages. The fireplace ignited lighting up the room, Zatanna jumped and turned to see Phantom Stranger appear.
“Where am I?” She asked as the fire crackled loudly in the silent study.
“This is your ancestral home of Shadowcrest. This home has been passed down to generation after generation of the Homo Magi family known as Zatara.”
“Homo what?” She said wondering what the hell was going on.
“The Homo Magi are an ancient race of humans who were exposed to mystical energies. Over time they evolved to be able to control these energies into what you call magic. Your father is one of those people” The Stanger stood still never moving, never showing emotion. Zatanna was beginning to be overwhelmed.
“You need to listen to me now. Your father has been taken captive by the demon known as Ligur, the Prince of demons. He wants to siphon John Zatara’s power and use it to overthrow his father the King; and take control of the Realm of the Dead. However the ritual can only be done during a lunar eclipse and if he succeeds then he will use his new found power to invade Earth and claim it for himself. Something his father could never do.” Zatanna backpedaled and sat herself down in one of the cushioned chairs by the fireplace. “The lunar eclipse is tomorrow.” He said coldly.
“You’re completely serious aren’t you?” She ran her fingers through her dark hair and sat back in the chair trying to take it all in, “I just don’t understand why my father would keep something like this all this time. Why can’t you just go in and save him?” She asked looking up with tears beginning to well up in her eyes.
“I cannot enter that dimension. I have tried, but Ligur’s spell has kept me out. I need your help in breaking the seal and saving your father.” The Stranger evaporated and into the chair in front of Zatanna.
“But I don’t have any....” Then it hit her. “Is that what I was doing today, magic?”
“Your skills have taken a lot longer to develop them most, but yes. You lack focus however. That is why I have brought you here.” The Stranger raised his hand towards a bookshelf and a book landed in Zatanna’s lap. “Take this book it will explain the history of your people in more detail.
“So I’m a witch?” She asked flipping through the old book.
“Call yourself what you want, but you must learn to concentrate and focus your energies or our rescue attempt will be a short one.”
Zatanna nodded and stood up from the chair. The Stranger walked over and put his hand on her shoulder. They teleported into another room within Shadowcrest. “This is your room. I will leave you to process all this information. I will return in a few hours to see what progress you have made.” He vanished again into the shadows. Zatanna broke down; tears streaming down her face. This morning she was only a college student now she’s on the verge of saving humanity from a demon.
Once she composed herself she knew she had to get to work. She walked over and sat down at an old antique desk and began reading. She couldn’t understand any of what she was reading; it was all mumbo jumbo to her. But she was hoping eventually something would just click in her mind. Hours passed and the more she read the more she began to understand it a little more. “Ok I can do this.” She said reassuringly. She reached over and poured some water into a glass. “Ok, let’s try the old water into wine trick.” She began concentrating and stared at the glass holding her hand out directly in front of it. “Come on, come on; I can do this...Turn into wine!” She exclaimed as the glass began to vibrate. The water ignited into a giant flame. “What the...” Zatanna stepped back and watched as the glass of water she had just poured was on fire. “What did I just do?” She began flipping franticly through the pages of the book. She heard a snap of the fingers and the fire extinguished.
“You are close but still lack the concentration.” She realized the Phantom Stranger was behind her.
“I don’t know what I did...I thought of wine and then boom, I get water flambé.”
“You are just like your father. Your father learned to concentrate more by focusing and saying what he wanted done backwards. By doing that he was able to focus on the words and able to control his abilities.” Phantom Stranger sat another glass of water on the desk. “Try it again.”
“Seriously? I have a hard enough time with the English language already, now you want me to say it backwards?” The Stranger looked at her with his cold empty eyes. “Fine, let’s see what happens.” She backed up and stood behind the chair just in case the desk decided to explode this time. “Eniw ot retaw.” Just then the color of the water began to change to a dark purple. Zatanna’s eyes lit up not believing what she was seeing. “You have got to be kidding; I just did that didn’t I?” Stranger nodded.
“I will give you the rest of the night to practice; tomorrow we enter the Realm of the Dead to save your father.” Again, vanishing back into the darkness.
“I can’t believe this. This is amazing." She walked to the center of her room and looked around. It was a dark and drab. She thought if this was going to be her home away from home, she would need to make it more modern and less depressing. She closed her eyes and concentrated. “Etaroced moor.” All of a sudden the room began changing into what her dorm room looked like. The sheets on her bed changed from a dark blue to a bright red, pictures of her and her father appeared on the wall. The curtains which were closed opened to let the moon light shine into the room. It looked like a completely different room afterwards. Zatanna walked by a mirror and realized she had been in the same clothes all day. She closed her eyes and said “Samajap.” She opened them to see she was in new silk pajamas with Zatanna embroidered on the front. “This is definitely more like it.” She sat down on the bed and looked at one of the pictures on the wall of her and her father. “Etativel erutcip.” The picture levitated off the wall and into her hands. She looked at it and ran her fingers across her father. He looked so happy standing there. She realized if she wanted to see him smile, or hug him one more time she was going to have to save him. She set the picture on the nightstand and pulled the covers over her. “I’m coming dad.” She said looking out the window into the starry night.
