Ultimate Shield: Issue #5 - A broken shield, repaired - part one of three
CHINA, CHENG DU, 2012, TUESDAY THE 13TH, 00:32
"Everything good on your end? Enquired Laura, as she casaully strolled down the night streets of the magnificently light Cheng Du in her civilian clothes.
""Yeah. My squad and squad C have arrived at the objective on time, B's running a bit behind." Replied Jay, covered head to toe in black with two other meta-soldiers, both dressed in the same clothes, crouching beside him.
Laura let out a prepared sigh before asking her question.
"That Robinson's unit?"
She already knew the answer but it was always better to double check. Something you learned quickly in the army.
"Before you go off on one remember most of the new meta-soldiers don't have the skills to take command. We've had to drag in Robinson with Joseph still out the game, and you won't find any normal military with as good a track record against meta's as Robinson."
Clearly not in a good mood. Thought Laura.
"Understood."
Laura pressed the lobe of her ear, disconnecting the call as she continued to walk down the busy streets. It was mostly natives but various toursists could be seen, for some the night was winding down and for others it had clearly just begun as the alcholol began to flow through their system.
-Okay. Just got to get into position, not that it really matters, in ten minutes and it should be all good.-

AMERICA, NEW YORK DIVISION OF PROJECT HERACLES, 2012, MONDAY THE 12TH, 11:39
"It's been a month since the operation in Gaza and you still have no idea what's wrong with him!" Screamed lueitenent general Graham at a handful of scientests and doctors, his haggard face a beet red, the constant pressure from higher ups for answers taking its toll on him. "Never mind what happened to the shield suit!"
"Well about that...." Nervously interrupted one of the older doctors. "...we think we know were the suit is. At first when we studied his blood samples we couldn't find anything wrong with him but upon closer inspection we noticed traces of the energy absorbing metal Farver, the special variant of silver created by Joseph's father." Answered the doctor, his pride growing with every word as he spoke of his findings.
Graham stood there, an unimpressed look on his face countering the group of learned individuals amazement at the statement.
"And what does that mean?" Angrily asked Graham, shattering the doctors confidence.
"Umm....we think the suit is inside him. And we, well I, theorize that the coma
he is in right now is merely a larvae stage of some sort as the amount is steadily increasing, which would mean his body is now naturally creating the metal."

AMERICA, UNDERGROUND BASE, 2012, MONDAY THE 12TH, 11:40
The withered body of Maxwell Lord shuffled along the empty halls of his underground base. They no longer needed all those mindless drones that Max had been controlling for all these years so he'd left them to die, some were still alive but thrist would eventually claim them. There plan had changed, for the best, when John had picked up a large amount of energy being created on the moon.
"Is the craft ready John?" Croaked Max, as he slowly made his way over to the alien vehicle.
John's metal frame was dwarfed by the size of the otherworldly ship, it's door alone was a good part bigger than him. He stood plugging and unplugging varoius cables, connected to the ship, in and out of his body, each one making a sickening squish as oil came leaking out with each removal.
"Just about. A few more adjustments to the ships A.I. will allow me control of the craft and the we shall be on the way to the moon. I never thought we'd need it so soon or else I would've finished this by now."
"Yes. Any idea what caused this surplus of energy?" Enquired Max, his beathing somewhat strained.
"No." Replied John, clearly annoyed at the mystery. "All the satelite could get was a few images of some sort of battle* but there was too much interference, regardless it doesn't matter. Now we can avoid this whole mess of brainwashing Laura and using her magic to open the door."
"Indeed. To think in one hour I will be young again, you will have your body and we will be on our way to conquering this world." Max stopped for a second as he looked at his right hand, his skin hangin loosely off the bone.
"This accursed alien technology is to blame." He whispered angerily. "How long will it take to get there? I don't think I'll last too long outside of our base."
"You should survive long enough, the ship has a similiar aura if just a tad weaker than our base here. I believe I told you this yesterday." Grinned John, taking pleasure in mocking his partner.
"I imagine. My mind......is not quite as well as it used to be."

UNKNOWN UNIVERSE, 2064
Chained and bound a blood soaked man is dragged by his captors, strange red humanoids deviod of features. His armour torn all over, a defeated look on his face the man has accepted his lose. As he is took through the strange medival castle he keeps his head low, his eyes fixed on the red carpet under his feet. Eventually they stop for a second as one of the creatures opens an overly designed double door, bringing into view a throne room, two figures can be seen sitting upon two similiarly designed chairs.
"Catman! It has been a while, you look as young as ever." One of the seated characters shouts across the room.
Catman rises his head, a look of hate and anger on his face, the will to fight returning.
"And you look as monsterous as always Mace!" Spitted Catman.
"Now, now Catman, you should really know your place. Those drugs of yours might have helped you beat me all those years ago but I think we both know I'm far beyond that now."
Catman knew this to be true if he had just finished him off fifty years ago one of the Leagues greatest enemies would be dead, not that he was a member but he wasn't the uncaring bastard he had been then, the world mattered to him now. But none of that could change the situation nowadays. He didn't stand a chance, compared to him Mace was a god, his powers just couldn't compare.
Mace rose from his seat, a smugness even in his steps, as he walked over to Catman who had been dragged to the centre of the room. Catman hated everything about him, his general phsyique was that of a human but his features where that of a demon. Black hair flowed from his head to his shoulders, his very eyes were blood red and his skin a greyish tone. His clothes matched his arrogance, wearing the robes of a king all he was missing was a crown thought Catman.
"Before I kill you....what were you doing here?" Asked Mace, a pompous grin on his face.
"You know why and I won't play your games! If you want to kill me, kill me!" Shouted Catman, preparing himself for the final blow.
"And it begins. My love, come here." Ordered Mace, a hint of lust in his voice.
Catman turned his battered face away as the second figure, a female, rose from the chair and walked over, an emphasis placed on the swing of her hips with each step.
"Stop it you sick fuck! She was your friend! Not some doll for you to play with!" Screamed Catman, his lungs burning with each word, due to the injuries suffered in the earlier battle that had led to his capture.
"I suppose I can see why she would want you, you are her type. You always where a bit of a sucker for damaged men, weren't you dear?"
Silence was her reply as she neared both men, latching herself to Mace. His eyes beginning to water Catman turned his face away again, closing his eyes.
"What's wrong, isn't she beautiful?" Mocked Mace, twirling her around to further the damage. "A bit quiet, I'll agree, but that's her own fault, she shouldn't be so troublesome. Isn't that right dear?"
The woman replied with a enthusiastic nod of her head and mouthing yes, showing her tongue to be nothing more than a stump. She herself was just human, long white hair that descended to her lower back, although her face was that of a thirty year old woman. She was dressed accordingly, considering the castle surrounding, in an elegant green dress with a white flair drawing attention to her bosom.
"I won't play your game.....just kill me." Whispered Catman, his remaining fire extinguished.
"All our encounters and this is how it ends? For shame Thomas."
With that Mace looked over to one of the red humanoids holding Catman's chain and gave a nod. In response the being marched over to Thomas, chain still in hand, and wrapped it tightly around his neck until a crack was heard. Thomas's body going limp.

CHINA, CHENG DU, 2012, TUESDAY THE 13TH, 00:42
"This is Robinson reporting in. Squad B is in position, sorry about the hold up."
"Good. We're still on schedule, just." Replied Jay.
All three squads surrounded, one of the many across China, Yu industries buildings. It stood just on the outskirts of Cheng Du, large grey brick walls with barb wire and survellance cameras along the top separating it from the rest of society, only one security gate for entry or exit. Effectice against your usual kind of intruders.
They were a company that specialized in gene manipulation, it was mostly for medical research but over the last eight years intelligence had gathered more and more information pertaining to experiments done for various terroists groups. The ruins of the Haza warehouse, in Gaza, had various reciepts and documents showing this to be true. Enough for the U.S army to send in the members of project Heracles or as they were know officially known as Meta division, after the arguable success of their first public mission.
"Silver, you in position?" Asked Jay, his knee cramping slightly crouching for so long.
"Yeah. I can go anytime."
"Right. Let's get this started then. Silver teleport in there and deactivate security."
Hearing the order Laura focused her eyes on her thumb, until it began to glow a bright blue, and then clicked her fingers causing a blue field of energy to cover her, disappearing as the energy seemed to collapse into itself. She was now inside Yu industries, basement level if the blueprints of the building were correct, and wearing her custom bronze armour. If intel was right the independent generator that this biulding ran on should be on this floor. By deactiviting it would allow squads A through C to barge by suprise and make their way down to the sub basement levels that should, again if intel was correct, lock down trapping all those involved in the supllying of meta-experiments to terrorists.
Silver was ready for things to get hairy this time, the incident in Gaza had shown her that while she was powerful there was still others more so and that her magic was no good if she didn't get the chance to cast a spell. For the last month she had spent more and more time on going over the basics in an attempt to understand her powers.
Unlike Jay and numerous other members of project Heracles, Silver's powers weren't easily monitered by the military scientists, it was mainly up to her to find out how they worked while the research teams patted themselves on their backs for a job well done. As she walked through the steps, she had rehearsed in her mind, to find the generator Silver couldn't help but feel proud of how fast she had charged the teleportation spell, just last week it had taken her at least two minutes but now it took only a second or two. The image of Joseph's body lying naked and beaten however cut her pride down, she didn't know how he had stopped that madman back in Gaza but if she had only been stronger then perhaps Joseph would be here now, cracking his usual jokes, instead of that Robinson.
Turning the corner she could see a door in front of her, it looked like any other door in the biulding.
Please don't let those idiots have given me out of date blueprints to memorize.
Approaching the door she could a whirr of machinery, restoring her confidence. Turning the handle she was pleased to see it was unlocked and quite amazed at how lax the security was on the upper floors.
I guess even the night security have no idea what's going on downstairs. Works for me it's made this far too easy.
Entering the room she let out a sigh of relief as in front of her was the state of the art L/Hig-05 power generator. Silver recognized it since she'd seen plenty of the s/Hig-05 model in makeshift army bases. Ever since its invention it had revolutionized the living standards of squads on the move, within an hour a camp could have all the electronic comforts of home and it was easy to pack away for a quick getaway. The most attractive aspect of it to the top brass however was it's cost effectiveness, one s/Hig-05 could store enough power to keep a thousand house's lit for up to twenty four hours or so the company rep. had said numerous times throughout the deal according to Jay. Briefly Silver wondered how many houses the large model would light.
"Jay. I'm at the generator Ready?"
"Yep, we're ready. Blow it."

AMERICA, NEW YORK DIVISION OF PROJECT HERACLES, 2012, MONDAY THE 12TH, 11:47
Joseph lay in the hospital bed, numerous wires connecting him to various machines. For the first two weeks the room had been a constant buzz with the best and brightest of the scientific world, that the army could persuade to come, trying to figure out what had happened to him. Fire, of Checkmate, had been the first to discover Joseph's body after the Gaza operation. She had written a report of the incident but it was the near the end of her report that concerned most.
'When I regained conciousness I returned to the Haza groups warehouse only to find that the mystery meta had vanished and that Shield had been stripped of his supersuit and appeared to be glowing a strange red colour as he lay unconcious inside a crater, which seemed to have been caused by exposure to extreme heat.'
This had lead to the taking of blood samples, a re-examination of the Shield suits blueprints, constant questioning of those involved in the operation (which Checkmate refused feeling the military had wasted enough of their agents time).
The room now however was quiet, the machines beeping and whirring the only sound. A security camera, attached to the roof of the room, kept it's trained eye on the bed. Directly underneath the camera the solid steel wall slowly began to creak open, as if it were a door, eventually opening all the way to reveal a strange looking pale, bald man. His eyes were pure white, his lips thin and his nose flat. Although he wore some loose fitting blue robes, he was clearly nothing more than bones.
Closing the wall behind him, he entered the room. For a minute he stood, his arms positioned in front of his stomach as he fiddled with his fingers, and then with a feeble smile he walked towards the bed were Joseph lay.

CHINA, CHENG DU, INSIDE YU INDUSTRIES SUB BASEMENT, 2012, TUESDAY THE 13TH, 00:55
After Silver had blown the generator squads A to C had moved in and quickly gained control of the upper portion of Yu industries, since it was protected by your average security guard unit it had been no problem. Once Silver had met up with the rest of the team they had headed off to where the plans had shown the entrance to the sub-basement levels. Since the doors had all went into lockdown after the generator had been taken out, they had to be blown open using a specially designed explosive as the doors were made out of zungsten, a new metal developed in China in recent years.
Attempts to get the exact recipe or location of this metal had so far been unsuccesful as the Chinese goverment kept a tight lid about its origins. Reports from American spies in China said its name was given due to it being superior in every way to tungsten steel and that the Chinese military wasn't too far off finding practical combat uses for it, a worry for Jay's higher ups as their experimental super glass, millent, was still a way off having any.
Based on the reports on zungstens attributes the tech division had come up with another of their 'breakthroughs' and believed they knew exactly the charge needed to destroy it.
This explosive or atosive, as the ever so proud tech team had coined, would detonate on an subatomic level causing zungstens atomic structure to collapse. Jay could remember the stern look the head of operations had given him when he had sniggered as the cheerful representative of the tech division had explained its use. It wasn't that he hated new technology, far from it, it was just he never understood why they always felt they had to test these things out in the field when troops, his troops, lives would be on the line.
Once they had planted the atosive on the zungsten door Jay, already a look of disappointement on his face, pushed the switch he had been given to activate it. For a second nothing happened and then the door suddenly began to crack along the top half, stopping as it stretched from one side to the other. Jay raised his eyebrow questionly looking over to Silver.
"I thought it was supposed to...." Jay trailed off realizing he wasn't quite too sure what he had expected. "Fuck it. Robinson see if you can push it through."
"Yes sir." Was the reply as Robinson cautiously walked over towards the door, his eyes never leaving his destination.
