Alright so since we are all DC fans of some sort here and we (or I) have started a few threads on DCnU topics here on the general boards that have gotten a little discussion going, I am going to start this all purpose thread for us to talk about DCnU books we have tried or are interested in, what we like or dislike etc. With the trades starting to come out soon, some who are trade waiters may be dipping in for the first time or looking for suggestions to dip in as well.
So I have mentioned elsewhere I really like Snyder's Batman, disliked Milligan's JL Dark, was underwhelmed by Johns/Lee JL, liked the issues I sampled of All Star Western and I, Vampire, and was unsure on the Green Arrow by Nocenti.
Well I will add another book that I like to the list-Scott Snyder's Swamp Thing.
I read #1-7 the past couple of days and it is amazing. I am a huge fan of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing. This is true to the spirit and tone of Moore's work while not being derivative or rehashing what has gone before.
It is a little slow paced, we don't actually see Swamp Thing in the present until #7 but the first six issues build the mythology and move Alec Holland forward from having awoken with memories of the Swamp Thing creature that was modeled after him by the Parliament of Trees to the point where he takes up the mantle once again. Snyder's new take on the Arcanes is amazing as well. So the two best books I have read in the new 52 both come form the mind of Scott Snyder.
Now I am pondering checking out his Image book (Severed) and his Vertigo book American Vampire and I am soooo tired of vampires but still might take a look because Snyder is that good).
So join the fray if you have comments, thoughts, questions, or observations about the DCnU books or comics in general...

I will definitely recommend American Vampire. The vampires there are decidedly not like your typical vampire. It's really well done though. I just have the first trade, but from what I hear, it remains pretty consistant.
Right now the only books I'm getting are Action Comics, Batman, The Flash, and Animal Man. I also plan on checking out Earth-2 when it starts in May and I will be getting Batman Inc. I also have a friend who gets Green Lantern, Nightwing, Justice League, Justice League Dark and Wonder Wonder Woman, so I get to read them too. So far my least favorite is actually Action (out of what I buy). It's good, not great and it doesn't live up to what he promised it would be.
THe biggest surprise for me is The Flash, but that could be the fact that I'm such a huge fan of the franchise. It's the best its been in years (since Johns left the first time) and the art is just beautiful.

Yeah I will be checking out Earth 2, World's Finest and Batman Inc. of the new books, and checking out the 3 part Vandal Savage arc in DC Universe Presents by James Robinson that runs after Didio's Challengers arc ends.
Speaking of Robinson, I picked up the first 5 issues of his Shade 12 issue mini the other day and they are next on my reading list.

I've been picking up a lot of the New 52. Flash has probably been my hands down favorite between Barry getting a shot of life and the beautiful art it's been awesome.
The absolute worst series I tried was Hawk and Dove. I adore Sterling Gates Supergirl run. So I decided to give Hawk and Dove a read after reading a newsarama interview with him. Rob Liefeld's art was terrible, but I'm pretty sure he had a hand in the story as well as it screamed 90's.

Honestly the book I enjoyed most from the relaunch has already been canceled. O.M.A.C. was basically a big dumb book with lots of smashing, colorful villains, and energetic art. It may have lacked a lot in substance, but it was fun; a quality I feel a lot of mainstream superhero titles severely lack nowadays.

Yeah, I don't really understand what Morrison is doing with Action Comics, I keep wanting to like it but it feels weak and messy. I'm loving Animal man and Wonder Woman. JLA is fine but a little blah and Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE is fun. I'll probably go back and get the trades of Batman, Flash & maybe even GL (never was a fan but I love Doug Mahnke's art so much). I hear Batwing is pretty good too.

The first month of all the new 52, I bought all of them and as of right now the only ones I'm still reading are Batman, Flash, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Teen Titans, Aquaman and JLA. The rest ranged from ok to crap. I really didn't like the direction they went with GL and Superman I have no idea what they are doing with him. I'm hoping they get him straightened out before the movie comes around next year.

Based on the recommendations of many of you folks here, I picked up Flash #1-4 today (the shop didn't have 5 or 6 in stock. I only got to read #1 so far, but you're right the art is gorgeous. I liked the first issue fairly well, enough that I want to read the other 3 issues I picked up here in a few minutes, but I will wait and see before deciding if I am going to add this to my list or even pick up 5 and 6 until after I read 2-4.
I did add Swamp Thing to my pull list while I was there today and since I keep a policy of if you add one you have to drop one, I am dropping one of the 2 Star Wars series I am getting after the first 5 issue arc is done.
I also picked up the first issue of Animal Man to try as well, but just the one as I am not as big o fan of Buddy as I am of Barry, so it will have to impress me in one issue to keep me reading.

I preferred Animal Thing to Swamp Thing to be honest.
I'm getting ready to drop Hawkman either when Liefeld takes over or sooner. Debating on what to pick up I'm leaning towards going back and getting all the issues of I' Vampire as I've heard the series is very good. Has anyone been picking it up?

I picked up issue #6 of I, Vampire because the Batman appearance gave me an excuse to try an issue of a series I was curious about. I liked it quite a bit. I picked up issues #4 and 5 (the shop was out of 1-3) but haven't read them yet. The art is fantastic and the one issue I read was very well written. I just finished Flash #2-4 and I am sold enough to pick up #5 and 6 when our shop's reorders come in. -M

Sweet glad I could get someone else to pick up a fantastic series. Flash is one off my favorite titles being published right now. I'm going to try I, Vampire out next week and possibly hope aboard.

So I read Animal Man #1. I knew there was a cross over coming with Swamp Thing dealing with the Rot, but I guess I didn't realize the two books were on a collision course right from the get go. That's kind of cool. I like this kind of tie in and universe building than I do the big sprawling cross-overs that seem too bloated to tell an actual story that is any good and where essential bits of the story are scattered among so many diverse places that it's impossible to get a complete story without investing a small fortune in it (fill in any -over series from Marvel or DC in the last 20 years). The last big cross-over I enjoyed was Legends when I was first really getting into DC beyond Batman and Justice League in 1986.
That said, I think I might pick up another issue or two of Animal Man to see where Lemire is going. This was my first real exposure to his stuff, though I keep hearing good things, and I liked it-I am just not a huge Animal Man fan (though I loved the run Morrison did early in his career when I felt his voice was still fresh). So I will take this one a couple issues at a time and see.
What it does give me is hope for Justice League Dark when Lemire takes over in a month or two.

I read I, Vampire 4 and 5 this afternoon at lunch. Both very good, so I will pick up 7+ and track down 1-3 at some point, though 7-9 I think are a cross over with JL Dark. Issue 4 had a pretty cool Constantine appearance and 5 was the first part of the Batman appearance. Issue 6 wrapped up that first arc and set up the JL Dark thing.
Bennett seems like an interesting character, but I think what I like is the ties to the great DCU, so I am not sure what I will think about the book if those ties aren't present though. So it may come down to how 1-3 read. However the book isn't selling well and the added ties may be a ploy to boost sales for a book that has been a critical darling but a sales disappointment. We'll see what the future brings and if DC does another wave of cancellations and new launches see if this book is still standing.

I, Vampire, while well written, has the distinct dishonor of being written at a time when it can be compared directly to American Vampire. I'm a huge fan of Vampire fiction, but honestly, I'm guilty of comparing the two. I, Vampire is not bad, but it's not American Vampire.

UPS doesn't usually deliver the week's shipment to my shop until between 2 and 3 on Wednesday, so I usually have to wait until Thursday to pick up books as they don't have them sorted before I have to be at work on Wednesday nights. -M

Yeah I'm settling into the new shop and the guy at the counter busted out laughing at my confusion when he handed me my books for this week.

SO I am catching up on the Shade mini-series. It's classic James Robinson and seems to build on everything we learned about Shade from the Starman series, despite the relaunch of the DCnU.
I have read #1-4 and have #5 waiting for me and I believe #6 comes out today as well. I am enjoying it so far. #5 is a Times Past story with art by Darwyn Cooke and is simply gorgeous. Cully Hamner handles the art on the other issues and while not bad, his stuff has never been my cup of tea. Not fond of his style, but his storytelling is solid so it's not problematic to read. #5 has art by Javier Pulido so I am not sure if the rotating artists will continue or not.
If you are a fan of Robinson and especially of his Starman run, check this out. I know sales haven't been great, but DC has said they are committed to publishing all 12 issues and won't cancel it, I hope so because I am enjoying it and Shade was one of my favorite parts of the Starman series.

So Only one DCnU book in my pulls this week-Shade #6, but I did get the first issue of Brian K. Vaughan's new sci-fi epic called Saga from Image Comics this week. I know a few people here mentioned liking BKV in the old comic talk thread, so I will post what I think when I get a chance to read it. Haven't had a chance to read much tonight, as I picked up my wife at the airport on her return from a 2 week business trip at about 7:30 and went to dinner with her. Glad she's back, I was going a bit stir crazy (if you hadn't noticed the spike in my posting the last 2 weeks ). I did pick up a few classic comics while at the shop on my way out to the airport though-and I blame Wachter for my spending money on these I found a low grade copy of Richard Dragon Kung-Fu Fighter #1. Had to pick it up, just had to. Damn you wachter. Also picked up Underworld Unleashed #2 and 3 out of the dollar bin to replace copies I got rid of long ago, and found the last classic Amethyst Princess of Gemworld appearance I needed-DC Comics Presents #63 where Amy meets Supes. If I hadn't seen the Richard Dragon ish I wouldn't have started fishing through the back issue bins, so it's all wachter's fault really. Fershuluggin' Richard Dragon in Grayson. Fah! -M

I look forward to your opinion of Saga. I'm really getting into some of the creator owned Image stuff like Morning Glories, Fatale and of course The Walking Dead and Invincible. And BKV is one of my favorite writers in comics. I don't think I've read something by him that I haven't liked. Y: The Last Man is one of my favorites and the one comic I give to non-comic book fans (and they generally love it). Runaways is a modern classic and even though I'm not done with Ex Machina, it's fantastic.
He also penned some of my favorite episodes of Lost. He wrote one of the weaker Desmond episodes, which was still great. I mean, look at the competition of Flashes Before Your Eyes and The Constant. His last episode was the one where Ben confronted the Smoke Monster who was pretending to be his daughter, which was fantastic. And he wrote The Shape of Things to Come, which could possibly stand as the greatest hour of television of the new millenium thus far.
