A Furry Interlude
By Jackalope and Wachter
“So what are you going to do with them?” Mathias asked as he poured a pint of beer for a customer, eyeing the young furballs who had made a mess out of his bar.
“Return them of course.” Detective Chimp turned away from the boys and looked down at his drink. “From what I've heard, I don't want to get on Father Time's bad side. But no Oblivion Door. I've decided turning up in the heart of S.H.A.D.E. might not be the best move tactically.”
“So that leaves?” the Troll asked before he pressed his giant body as close to the counter as he could to let a young man with a face and hair beyond his apparent years squeeze by.
“The good old fashioned way,” Chimp sighed, watching the man hang up a sword above the bar, “we drive.”
“Do you even know where S.H.A.D.E. is?” said Mathias sliding a drink along to a man in a pirate costume.
The man poured himself a drink from the tap, not paying attention in the least to the conversation.
“I have some ideas, besides, I am a detective.” Chimp felt something tug on his shirt. Looking around, he saw the Cat-boy gazing up at him with large eyes. “What is it Tom?”
“I want to go see my dad.” Tom's voice was quick but clear.
“Uh, Tom, I'm not sure... I really need to get you back to your home.”
“I want to go see my Dad,” Tom repeated, “you said you knew who he was. I want to meet him before we go back.”
Chimp closed his eyes. “Fine. We'll leave in the morning.” He turned back to his drink. “And they say don't work with kids or animals.”
That seemed to get the man’s attention. He set his mug down and blinked, seeing the bar for the first time. He took in the four creatures all below the five feet in height and the wet fur. His nose crinkled. “Why are there kids in my bar?”
Matthias busied himself by whistling through blocky teeth and made his way to the kitchen, leaving Chimp out to dry… literally.
“Funny story, that, James…” Chimp chuckled, “But to hear it, I must say I need to be topped off first…”

S.H.A.D.E. HQ, One Hour Ago
“...a chimp.”
The green creature suddenly leapt to his feet and crouched low, his eyes flicking over them. Detective Chimp, Aaron, and Tom remained frozen as they watched the green-furred creature for any signs of aggression, but the beast seemed just as cautious of them, as they were of him.
“Stay very still, we don't know what it wants yet,” Chimp said out of the side of his mouth. “Smile kids, we need to show it we're friendly...” The three watchers suddenly all revealed their teeth in wide unnatural grins. The green figure shrunk back, alarmed at the flashing smiles. Detective stopped, “Bananas, I forgot the baring of teeth is seen as a signal of aggression in chimps...”
Aaron raised his eyebrows and stared at D.C. with some disbelief. “But you're a Chimp!” he whispered harshly. The Detective shrugged sheepishly.
“I know,” Tom said, reaching into his backpack and pulling out a Herseys Chocolate bar. “He's probably hungry after being stuck in that weird box for ages.” Ripping open the brown wrapper, Tom broke off a piece of the chocolate and threw it in his mouth and made exaggerated eating noises, “Mmmm, mmm. It tastes soo good.” He held out the rest of the bar towards the green creature and shook his hand.
The green boy looked at the chocolate with a fearful curiosity. Chimp held his breath as the boy seemed ready to strike. This alien, of some kind, that stood in front of him was breathing air just like them, but its shape seemed to not be fixed like theirs. Chimp's mind raced with the possibility of what such a creature might do at any moment if they made the wrong action. Suddenly Tom's outstretched hand offering chocolate seemed like a very dangerous idea.
A green arm blurred, and now the small chimp boy was holding the bar. He sniffed it, then touched it with his tongue. An involuntary smile swept the green face of the boy and he quickly pushed the whole bar in his mouth. Its cheeks stretched to bursting, the kid chewed, whilst the boys looked on hesitantly. Finally swallowing, the green boy showed a chocolate stained smile at the three watching him.
“Does that mean he's angry?” Aaron whispered.
“I don't know,” Chimp admitted. There was the faintest sound of bones cracking and creature unexpectedly sported a tail that gracefully floated behind him. Chimp looked down at Tom with his tail, then back at the green boy's whose own mimicked the cat-boy's. “He's adapting.”
Aaron crept back further behind Detective Chimp while Tom took a step forward, “He likes me. Well, he likes the chocolate.” The kitten-kid held up his hand again and the beast-boy followed suite, mirroring him. The creature's ears started to come to a point. Tom laughed, and the alien-thing made a similar attempt. Tom made a funny face, so did the creature. Looking back at Chimp, he smiled, “Can I keep him?”
“Absolutely not!” Chimp said firmly, “now we need to figure out where we are...”
WOOOOOEEEEERRRRRRRR!!!!
An alarm, like that of a fog horn rumbled through the room and red lights started to flash from the ceiling. Aaron screamed. The creature screamed. Its mouth opened twice as wide as the bat-boy's and was filled with two rows of sharp teeth. At this Aaron screamed louder, until Detective Chimp put his hand over his mouth.
“Quiet! We need to move quickly to get out of here, I for one don't want to get on the bad side of S.H.A.D.E.” Chimp explained, “But first, we have to put the green boy back in his sarcophagus then we can get out of he...” He turned around to see an empty spot where the green boy had stood. “Where has he gone?”
“I've got him!” Tom called as he ran after the racing creature.
“We're gonna get in so much trouble!” Aaron yelled as he chased, “I said 'let's go back to class,' but no! You said it would only take a minute!”
“I don't want to be put in a cage, I don't want to be put in a cage,” Detective Chimp repeated to himself as he ran. “We have to catch him and put him back!” he called.
“I KNOW!” Tom yelled back. Stupid adults always telling you what to do. Who puts an open button in a statue's nostril anyway? Stupid adults. The creature turned down a corridor filled with crates and what looked like wrapped paintings. Tom followed. As the other two caught up, Tom was half way down the aisle. The flashing red light revealed the green furry boy huddled at the end of it, trapped between the crates on either side and the wall behind him.
“Block him off,” Chimp said, “We need to make sure he doesn't slip by.”
Breathing heavily, the green glared at Aaron intently. Tom took another step towards the trapped boy, trying to seem nonthreatening. “It's ok green fella, I won’t hurt you...”
The green boy jumped, abruptly growing what looked like bat wing and flying into the air over head of them. “He can fly…?” Aaron commented, looking down at his own webbed arms, “I can't fly.”
Tom bounded after the now bat-like green boy. Galloping on four limbs, he had never realized he could run so fast. His eyes focused on the bat creature overhead of him. His claws suddenly unsheathed from his fingers, and felt a powerful stirring inside of him. Hunt.
D.C. heard something. Doors griding open and footsteps filing in. S.H.A.D.E. security. “This isn't good.” He grabbed Aaron and started to climb up the stacked crates and shelves. Aaron’s huge ears flicked as he heard the approaching security.
“Over there, Time says we need to capture the little monsters quickly, we can't let them get away. They might've been taken hostage by an enemy operation. Maximum caution is advised, but lethals are permitted. Over.”
Aaron's huge eyes widened. He looked to the Detective who was pulling him higher up. “We should get out of here...”
The Chimp nodded, adjusting his hat. “Hold on.” Pulling the bay hybrid onto his back, he jumped and swung onto another nearby shelving unit. Aaron whimpered, his clawed hands dug into the Chimp's chest. He gritted his teeth. “Not a fan of heights?” Aaron, with closed eyes, shook his head. The Detective shook his own head, as he swung to the next platform. “What are they teaching you here?” All of a sudden a net whistled past them. “S#!t,” cursed D.C. “Don't repeat that,” he added.
Tom was grinning. He had never felt so free. His mind seemed clear of all things, stupid homework,
stupid girls, stupid rules, stupid dads who weren't there. He could see the flapping green bat flying ahead of him. His jeans had ripped he was sure, but he felt like could catch the sun. The bat-thing screeched and twisted in the air, changing directions.
At the top of a platform, somewhere between an elongated skull in a glass box and what Detective Chimp could only guess was some sort of cursed toilet, Aaron and he could see the warehouse more clearly. To their left two squads of S.H.A.D.E. guards were sneaking about towards them. To their right, Tom was at full speed, chasing down the green creature. He heard a flick. Turning Chimp could see Aaron trying to light a match. “What are you doing!?” he shouted in a raised whisper only those with their enhanced hearing could catch.
“W-w-we need to get out of here. Me and Tom aren't allowed off level 17 without proper S.H.A.D.E. supervision! A-and YOU don't count, and they have guns, and I don't want to get shot!” Aaron flicked another match. It lit for a moment. The fire sprintlers kicked in putting the match out and soaking everyone.
Tom felt the moment and leapt. He grabbed the green creature from the air, grabbing his wings and pulling him to the ground. The urge to bite the things neck was strong as it struggled under his paws. Water hit him. He shivered and looked down. The green creature changed, his arms returning to their more ape like form. He still had the tail. The boy's face looked up at Tom, its red eyes filled with fear. Ahead of him, the wall hissed. Light flooded in as a huge door opened. In the frame stood a monstrous silhouette, scaly skin covered clawed arms, and the head was surrounded by a halo of hissing snakes. Tom whimpered. The green beast boy flicked out a forked tongue.
“Come on!” Tom grabbed a green hand and dragged the boy away from the Medusa-like figure.
“No, wait!” called Lyta.
As water started to pool on the floor, Tom and his new companion splashed through to the aisles of strange objects. Huge luminous mushrooms were growing out from one crate, obviously reacting to the moisture. A squad of S.H.A.D.E. security turned the corner, right ahead of Tom. The nearest turned his nightvisioned goggles to the catboy and pointed. “There's one of them.” Tom eyes spotted the guns in their hands and darted in the other direction. Behind him he heard the splash of one of them tripping.
“Tom!” Tom turned and saw Detective Chimp drop down into the shallow water. Aaron climbed off his back and smiled that his friend was safe.
Chimp pulled out an ancient looking lighter and held it up. “Boys, I think it's best that we get out of here post haste.” He clicked a little button on it, releasing a blue flame. Behind Tom, the green boy flinched. A familiar door appeared on the wall beside the Detective. “Leave the green thing and lets get out of here.”
“No!” Tom shouted.
“It belongs here, Tom,” Chimp tried. “They're gonna be here any moment.”
“No!” Tom repeated, “He's like us, he's one of us!”
Aaron raised an eyebrow and looked up at D.C.. The Chimp hesitated a moment, scratching the back of his head. “Fine,” he said eventually, pulling open the door for them. “What's a little thievery added to kidnapping? Actually, I've changed m—” The boys were already through. He heard splashing as S.H.A.D.E. security approached. He jumped in and slammed the door behind him.
Huffing and panting, he looked about to see three soaked wet children and a disgruntled looking troll standing behind the bar. Matthius put down the glass he was drying, and looked over the water that was pooling under the returning guests. The cat-boy gave an involuntary shiver, sending water flying around him. “Now the bar's gonna smell like wet chimp,” he sighed, and went to find some towels.
---
The boys shivered on three chairs set around the large open fire that heated to Oblivion Bar at night. Wrapped in huge towels, they sat in their briefs as their clothes dried in front of them. All three held mugs of hot cocoa, and though the green child seemed wary of the fire, he was mesmerized by the taste of the sweet cocoa. Tom opened his bag and pulled out another chocolate bar and broke it in three. “Here,” he said handing it around. Aaron took his bit, smiling. The green boy greedily ate his, sipping his drink as he chewed.
He looked to the other two. “Choc-coco-late.”
“Woah!” Aaron said, almost jumping off his seat. “You can talk? You can speak English?”
“English,” the green boy tried. “Yeaahs.”
“Wow,” Tom said smiling. “What's your name?”
The green kid gave a questioning look.
“Name. Like what you call yourself.” Aaron explained. “I'm Aaron,” he pointed to his own chest, “and he's Tom.”
“Name?” The boy drained the rest of his cup, a long pink tongue swiped his milk moustache off his face. “Gar...g..gar...”
“Garfield!” Tom finished. “Garfield's a great name, he's a cat like me, you know?”
“Like you?” Gar suddenly became more cat-like, growing whiskers and having his ears move atop his head though he remained green.
“Holy shoot!” Aaron exclaimed. “That's crazy, you're like a super-hero. The 'Boy Beast'.”
Garfield changed back to his more ape-like form, though retained his tail and pointed ears. He smiled. Tom looked to Aaron, “He's one of us.” Aaron nodded.
