This is where we post little facts about the our Universe that we can use to pepper your fics with. Post everything that you can think of (that could be contradicted, don't really need to know the exact date your hero started up). This is mainly just for common history and current events. And if you don't want people to mention it in their fics, italicize it.
For example: The Justice Society of America formed in 1969. Max Mercury was the first Flash.
That last one is a poor example. But here, post all the stuff that you think it useful to the Universe as a whole and we can create a timeline (it will be in the second post).

So as of right now, how did the timeline for there being super heroes go down?
I haven't finished reading all the issues up yet, but I know Fox mentions Flash in WWII era. And the JSA is mentioned in Vietnam. After the JSA ended after Vietnam are heroes pretty much done until "present day"?
I'm just trying to get an idea. I wanted to make a mention about how suddenly all these rumors of costumed heroes are spreading over the US.

Okay I read Starman #1 and see there have been heroes for a while, so scratch that I guess.

It's still possible to go somewhat the Smallville route with Supes being the first to truly make people look up.

Yeah. My ideas were to have superheroes be relatively few and far between before. The Flash (Barry Allen) is going to be around at the end of the 20th Century to the first few years of the 21st Century, but other than him and a couple other more tech based crime-fighters, there aren't many. With The Flash in WWII, it will only be him, Starman and a couple others. With the JSA in Vietnam, we could have them be the only heroes for the most part.
In which case we could have an explosion in the present day with Superman, Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Black Canary and others. There was a line in All-Star Superman, which I can't seem to find right now where Superman said how exciting it was to be around during the Dawn of the Age of Heroes. And it would be really cool to do something like that.

Abin Sur became a Green Lantern in 1655. If anyone needs/wants him for stories set earlier, let me know.

Wonder Woman's mother Hippolyta fought during WW2. I plan on doing something with that at some stage.

Both of my stories take place in modern day, though the first Blue Beetle has operated in Los Angeles since 2005, and mysterious happenings started in Africa in the mid-1990s. These tie into real life events for the most part though so it should be okay.

Wonder Woman's mother Hippolyta fought during WW2. I plan on doing something with that at some stage. Jay Garrick will have been active around WWII. Ted Knight will be active in the late 40s-mid 50s and then again in the mid 60s through the Vietnam era. Rex Tyler will be active during Vietnam. I have more plans to claims some more Golden Age characters who will most likely round out the JSA and be active in Vietnam.

So I'm leaning towards the Soviet Union not falling to pieces in 1991 does anybody have a huge problem with this?

I don't think it matters unless they're still the Soviet Union... Also depends on what you mean by "not falling to pieces."

I meant the Soviet Union still exists and Communism has spread across much of Asia and Eastern Europe. I mean it's not a huge deal to me I just think a book like Checkmate is helped by an intense geopolitical environment.

You don't need Communism/Soviet Union for an intense geopolitical environment.

Yeah, I'd argue that it's almost too big of a change to "force" on everyone else. Something as big as The Cold War still going on would be on the forefront of nearly everyone's mind. If you're making a larger Universe wide plot device, it would be best for it to be able to be ignored by the rest of the writers should they choose. This would not be able to.
