I understand it can be created other ways (i.e. China's huge super human population). It's just an easy one to draw off of for creating the right environment for a global book. I haven't started getting super into plotting so it's not a huge deal to me. Just an idea I've been throwing around for my book in my head.
Understandable and it had crossed my mind that it was a bit too big of an event to alter. WHich is why I wanted to through it out there before I moved forward with it.

Yeah, I must say it's great to see some out of the box thinking, but I can just see that hindering some creativity down the line. Continuity and canon should enhance creativity, not take it away.

Could always use one of us as a bouncing board to try to pound out your ideas.

That would feel inorganic. I mean, that would change a lot, and definitely box stuff in. A lot of the little stuff some of us may take for granted.

There was still quite a bit of messed up stuff was still happening in Eastern Europe in the 90's anyway (eg Balkans), somehow incorporating that might help...

I think if you are looking for geo-political drama, buck, use fictional countries. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but DC has to have a few.

DC does have them and I plan to utilize them. I am also trying to incorporate the real world into my book and the event I'm proposing is something that is virtually erased by the year 2011.

Oh and for the record the titles that are in continuity right now are:
Ultimate Wonder Woman Ultimate Hawkman Ultimate S.H.A.D.E. Ultimate Flash Ultimate Green Lantern

What do you mean in continuity?

Post by C_Miller on Jul 26, 2011 14:24:12 GMT -5
After four issues, the titles are locked into continuity. It's to more or less to create a rule so that we don't have reboots of some of our characters every five seconds. Like if I write 10 issues on The Flash and have to drop it due to some unforeseeable circumstance, it has to be picked up where I left off or at the very least a reboot has to make sense.

I've got some things to say, but I'm also just checking if they're "okay" as well.
My story is going to begin in a past tense, and then after Aquaman becomes king it's going to have a time jump 5-ish years into the future. (To give Aquaman's son time to be at least 4 years old.)
The idea is also so that during that blank period of time anyone could be free to use Aquaman in various Justice League type stories if they wanted to.
Is that cool? Does that work for everybody?
So it would go like this:
- Atlantis sinks beneath the ocean in 9600 BC.
- For thousands of years Atlantis is an isolationist nation. Atlantis knows of the surface world, but the surface world does not openly know about Atlantis. (Some higher ups or conspiracy theorist can know. Just like in the real world how Atlantis is considered a "myth". You get the idea.)
- In the past, a young Prince Orin briefly travels the surface world.
- Orin becomes King and there's the 5 year gap. Within the first year his son is born. During this time Orin makes frequent visits to the surface. If someone wants to use him for Justice League stories, *this* is the time period they could be free to do so.
Anything after that is spoiler territory obviously.

5 years into the future is pretty tight. The only thing I worry about is you're establishing a set future. If something major happens in your Aquaman story like a city explodes or something like that well that's in continuity and at some point we'd all have to at some point (albeit probably a few years from now) reference it. Unlike TKJ's future which is set further in the future, there's more wiggle room.
Ok, so what I'm saying is, it's ok in my book but I'd check with us if you plan on doing anything Earth changing.

Only in regards to Atlantis. No surface world changing events.
And once my first planned "arc" is concluded, the continuity can always "catch up" and use the modern Aquaman from that point on.
Like you said, 5 years is pretty tight, and there's nothing saying someone has to use the Aquaman from the first year. I'm just trying to free up anyone who wants to use Aquaman right away and doesn't want to wait until my run ends.

Ok sounds fair to me. Again, just let us know what's going on if you decide to bring something to the surface.

Well in the spirit of full disclosure there's going to be a completely fictional uninhabited volcanic island involved. It shouldn't have anything to do with anyone else's story, but it's on the "surface".
I'll also be using the Mizen Head beach which is in Western Ireland. But nothing's going to "happen" to it. Since that's a pretty obscure location from DC comics that is entirely from the Aquaman books, I don't think anyone else will want to use it but with recent events, you never know...

Superman has become a worldwide hero. He met with the President, whoever that may be(seriously we need to make this decision already), and has been working internationally.
Intergang is a national crime syndicate. It is run by Morgan Edge, who travels around the country but is based in Metropolis. It is well known he is the leader of Intergang but no one can find a shred of proof. Or those who do don't live long enough to make use of it.
S.T.A.R. Labs is not corrupted by Intergang as a whole, but many of it's individual facilities are in bed with Intergang.

I'm relatively date oriented. Would you be able to give a quarter that he became public. I assume 2011, but January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December? With me catching up to the present, I'd like to be able to mention Superman if I could.

As for President. I nominate Jim Harper. I have the general claims to The Guardian name, so that's easy enough.

I have not dated my series as to not cause any continuity issues with other series. We don't all update at the same speed, so once you start dating things it can mess everyone up.
If you NEED a date range, in my mind it's been summer in Metropolis.
