"Another hour, maybe two?" Jade sighed. She was sitting on a door while Di used a plank to row the the make shift raft move. Kate was sitting crossed legged on her own door nearby.
"Half and hour at most. Point is we got out safely." Kate paused to remove a splinter from her hand. "And we know a company to look into."
"If you're bored you can always take up rowing. I think I've smoothed out our piece." Di winced as she kept them moving. Jade nodded and slowly got up to take another turn.
"It is smoother." She said as she started rowing again, Di carefully laid down to keep the plank balanced, and started pulling the wood out of her hands.
"Just after nine." Kate said and sighed. "How do I explain this one?"
"Late night board meeting?" Di suggested.
"Share holders session?" Jade added. "Or you could just own up and tell her you're a masked hero. She'll find out someday."
"What did you have planned?" Di said as she took the Swiss Army knife from Jade to go after the deeper ones, having to dig. She rinsed the blood off in the water nearby. "Salt water cleans cuts, right?"
"Not sure I would trust haven water." Kate said dryly. "Dinner, movie. Night cap at my place, go from there. Been looking forward to it all week."
"So had she." Di said, continuing her work. "I'll need to know your story, I'm already working on one of my own."
"Ya, this will go over like a load of bricks." Jade admitted. "Forgot about that."
"Crap, your mom." Kate winced, they had not told Mrs. Lance everything about their plan.
Trapping the crooks she was in full approval of, dressing her daughter like a whore to do it she would never be. In the past they had just changed at her place before taking Di and Jade back home , that wasn't going to work here. They were three hours late, the instructor would be at the docks waiting for for her little bird to make sure she was alright.
"I've been running all kinds of ideas through my head, none of them explain this get up. I'm doomed." The blonde said lightly, resigned to her fate. "I'm grounded for at least a month this time."
"You're twenty-four." Kate said dryly. "What is it with having parents and not growing up."
"My mother is the original Black Canary who fought with the JSA, survived two wars with Lady Shiva and won, guarded three cities at once and found a way to raise me the whole time." Di stated blandly. "Then she lost her husband, worked with her JSA friends again in NYC, came here, started a gym with Wildcat himself and somehow talked Shiva into helping. If she says dress nice and no hanky panky the correct response in 'yes, mom'. Sick or not she can still kick my ass."
"You have to grow up someday." It was a silly hang up, Mrs. Lance was a good mother, but controlling in a few aspects. "It's not her call."
"She's a product of her time. It happens, and I can't say I mind too badly. It's not like I've met anyone anyway." Di got the last splinter out and handed the knife back to Jade who still had pockets. "About Renee."
"Late night at the office. Stuck in conference calls. I'll send a post dated email." Kate saw the docks through the darkness.
"This is going to bite you in the ass." Jade warned. "You know it."
"Speaking of." Di saw her mother's silhouette pacing the pier. "I'll just be working and training for awhile."
The doors arrived at the dock and when the hit they heard the wood clanking. The figure hurried over and knelt over the edge to help the girls up.
"Thank God, I've been loosing my mind. We heard about the mission but you never checked in. Kate, nice to see you well. I told Renee I sent you on a trip for medicine for me. You're covered dear."
"Thank you, I appreciate it." Kate got on the pier and took the towel that was offered. "Jade is right behind me."
Jade held up a hand and was pulled up, also taking a towel. Mrs. Lance eagerly looked over the ledge, worry on her face.
"I'm here, mum. Just trying not to fall in the water." Di said. "Ready."
A glitter tinted hand appeared over the side and Mrs. Lance hurried to pull her only child to the surface. The darkness hid Di's outfit until her mother pulled her into a hug.
"My darling girl, thank god. I kept thinking what might have happened, how you were hurt." Her mother held her close. Slowly she leaned back to look at her little girl. Her eyes narrowed and delivered a smart slap across Di's cheek. The young woman wasn't surprised. "Whose idea was this. Dressing Di like a slut."
"Mine, we needed a ploy, nothing happened-" Kate hurried to explain.
"There's that at least. What if they hadn't come out in time, Dinah. What if they had been taken out and you were alone." She grilled the girl. "Your father would be heart broken to see you like this. Kate, stay out of this. You are better then this, and I'm ashamed to see it. You will never get your Mr. Green Eyes if you lower yourself to filth. In the car, now. Jade, stay with Kate tonight."
Di put up no resistance as she walked to the parked car, the treatment roughly what she expected. Jade tried to follow but Kate grabbed her arm and shook her head. She knew better. The only temper stronger then Lady Shiva's was Black Canary's.
"It was close, the boat being rigged wasn't expected. You pulled them out, were they hurt?" Ted looked at his friend, Di took a deep breath.
"No sign of injuries. Just had to deal with a disciplinary issue." She sat down and pulled out a bottle of water while adjusting her headscarf. The chemo had gone into effect .
"Heard about that. Weren't nearly so strict with yourself, old girl." The ghostly voice drifted in the air. "What gives with the lashing?"
"If you had ever had a daughter you'd understand." Di quickly redirected the conversation. "Are they ready?"
"Aye. Still keep with the training, but I say it's time." Ted said, he looked around the room. "Unless you lot disagree."
"They aren't ready for major missions yet, but I'm okay with the few we have." Sandra agreed. "Training will have to be as they go."
"Fine lasses, wicked fighters. If they pass can I help? That was fun." The voice said gleefully.
"Di, this is you. We clear this they get real missions, not intercepting packages. You know they can get hurt, or worse." Ted looked at her, she was conflicted. "The question is are you ready."
"Di is, I'll have to be." The woman said at last. "I'll have my old uniform cleaned. If we're doing this we're doing it right. She gets the mantle proper."
"And it is done." Sandra said, looking at the two meaningfully. "The Birds of Prey have been formed. Can I assume I've held my end of this?"
"You have, Shiva. Thank you." Di said, nodding formally. "I release you, if you wish to go."
It was just after lunch when Kate looked up to see the door opening and her vocally skilled friend wave as she entered. Jade saw at roughly the same time and hurried over to grab a hug.
"I'm so sorry, I really didn't mean to get you in trouble. I knew your Mom didn't like club gear but -" Di chuckled.
"It's fine. As soon as she verified that nothing happened we were good again. I came with news actually. We've been passed." She nodded to Kate.
"By all of them?" Kate asked and Di nodded. "So it happened. We're official."
"We made it, even me." Jade said softly before Di pulled her into a tight hug.
"That was never a question. You have a costume." She looked at Kate. "Mom is breaking her old one out for me to try. What about you?"
"I have a few pieces from the court tests. I'll keep the mask." Jade grinned. "Do we have a mission?"
"Docks, eight. Don't be late." Di grinned. "We have visitors to welcome."
The view of the docks from the third crane was perfect. He adjusted the focus of his spy glasses and smiled. There were clues that were harder to read, those quickly hidden by veteran heroes were a welcome challenge. They could be nearly impossible. Which meant it was all the more exciting when he did figure it out.
A large cloud of smoke quickly surrounded the area of the newly arrived personal, the personal guests of the infamous Roulette, owner of a property newly opened as an illegal fighting ring. The smoke was an old tactic, and not unexpected by the four new arrivals.
Several of them jumped to ledges and nearby rooftops, but were met. Vigilantes had been waiting in the shadows for the guests to separate. One he knew, the new Batwoman. She had claimed the mantle some time ago, but tonight she was out doing herself. The new forms were of a fighting style even he had never seen, he quickly took shots to analyze later. She was somehow holding the attention of three attendees.
The next to catch his eye was the formerly unpredictable "Cheshire". Three years ago he had spotted her at a circle attack acting as back up. Shortly after she had changed sides and started fighting along side her bat themed friend. Six months after that she had gotten a third companion, who was almost certainly here. The costume was new, but suited her, and the style she used was a stronger version of the first he had scene. She was only holding the attention of two, but seemed well in control.
The third was a blonde young woman, commonly in a black head to toe suit that accented her infiltration skills, and was often the last of the three to be spotted. Today was no exception, he spotted her using parkour under the dock where Roulette herself was hurrying to the boat for a a getaway. The Lady Roulette was mere inches from the gangplank when the figure flipped over the edge and pulled her prey into a tight hold. He grinned, so she was the Canary's daughter.
The fight was going well until the arrival of four new members, white clad women. Batwoman saw the arrival and quickly covered her mouth and nose with a mask from her outfit, Cheshire did the same. They both threw new balls onto the ground and the five they were fighting fell to the ground. Batwoman knelt down and hurried to hog tie the five. The mask wearing young woman hurried to her canary counterpart and joined fighting the four new contenders. Roulette hurried away.
The young Canary got a break and threw her own sleeping ball, the white clad women quickly scattered. The three seemed disappointed but put the bound prisoners on the boat and rode off to, what he assumed, was a drop point.
"The Circus of strange." He spoke into his voice box. "Professor Pyg in tow. Roulette is looking for help." He smiled. "Captured by the Birds of Prey. Need to keep an eye on this one."
"Half and hour at most. Point is we got out safely." Kate paused to remove a splinter from her hand. "And we know a company to look into."
