Night has fallen on the mountains that separate the Pacific Plains and the wastelands. The wintry tempest has deposited a putrid gray snow on that crunches under Hex's boots as he dismounts General, the faithful steed who has seen him through many bounties. Hex pats the horses nose three times signaling for him to stay put, but stay aware. Horses got more smarts then most care to believe. Hex had yet to meet a man who could receive a command and follow it as well as General. That's why he didn't operate like most of the other bounty hunters who worked in groups and split the bounties as many ways.
Hex had been chasing the man for six days from the coast. The trail led into this small village in the Northern Pass. His man had to have come through here. Obidiah Griggs, the deadliest serial killer in the West, he'd killed nearly fourteen people before Turnbull sent Hex after him. The man had a fetish for spinal fluid cocktails. Griggs wore a necklace made from the vertebrae of his victims. It weighed on his mind heavily on rather he'd killed again in this snowy mountain top village.
Hex walks the rest of the way to the village. The gray snow made the night seem even darker then it was. Jonah approaches the first house in the village no sign of any light and on a night like tonight every house should have a roaring fire simply for heat. Hex tries the door it's locked and won't budge. Continuing through the village every house is the same no sign of people, no fires, locked doors at everyone.
On the sixth house, Hex pulls his weapon and kicks the door open. The sound of the door hitting the wall echoes throughout the house. Hex checks the house room by room finding signs that the home had people living in it. Hex exits the house being sure he closes the broken door behind himself. Jonah is shocked as he exits to see a woman walking up the hill. He quickly trots up to the woman. He pauses for a brief moment and admires her stunning figure grabbing her by the should her calmly asks, "Excuse me, Miss. I'm looking for lodging for the night do you know of anywhere I could rent a room."
The young woman turns and looks at Hex opening her mouth she reveals a mouth filled with rotten teeth as blood oozes from her gums. Jonah tries to hide his shock and disgust, but he knows he failed badly. Through her bloody and rotten teeth the woman responds, "Just up the hill at the church. Everyone is up there for tonight's supper. The Church always has room for travelers. We all have to stick together in these rough times. You can follow me on up. I'm just going to get some of the communal dinner." Two men approach Jonah flanking him on either side.
Jonah nods and follows the woman as she labors up the hill. Something Jonah learned quite sometime ago was that human
flesh doesn't provide all of the nutrients that the human body needs to remain strong. It can't break everything down either which makes cannibals sluggish which would be an advantage. As they near the halfway point Hex notices the crowd around him growing at least ten people were around him now. Hex cautiously checks his side arms since there is only one way he's getting out of this and that's with a gun in each hand.
As they approach the church the smell washes over Jonah. The unforgettable smell of charred human flesh. Hex looks around him the group around him has now swelled to nearly thirty men, women and children. As the door to the church swings open Hex does a quick head count. Another twenty people were inside the church four of them blocked the fire where Obidiah Griggs had met his end. Hex shoves the young woman with the rotten mouth into a group of bystanders and lunges toward some open space.
Hex lifts the heavy revolver in his right hand and let's off two quick rounds tearing through eight of the cannibals. Hex pulls out his hunting knife as the cannibals react by throwing themselves at him. Hex makes his way through the crowd slashing wildly to keep the beasts at bay. Hex lets loose with two more shots and takes down another six villagers. Hex's blade slashes across the face and into the necks of several villagers before becoming stuck in the skull of a big brute of a man. Hex places the barrel against the handle of the knife sending the blade and handle speeding out through the man's skull and out the other side burying itself in the chest of the woman with the rotten teeth.
The now blood-soaked Hex takes a quick breather and performs a quick head count letting off another round that rips through the chest of two more cannibals. Hex's switches to his second gun with the ammo out in the first one. Pulling a second knife Hex begins to try and conserve ammo as a reload is nearly impossible in these tight confides. Hex makes careful strikes not wanting to lose another blade with the villagers still far outnumbering him.
Body after body hits the floor each spraying Hex with a new layer of blood. The killing did nothing for him not like it did for some of the other bounty hunters out there. It was just part of the job. Hex turns and throws his knife lodging it in the back of one of the cannibals trying to escape through a back door. Hex pulls out his favorite weapon; the tomahawk. Hex senses the hand on his shoulder a moment to late as he is pulled down from behind. The mob attempts to overtake the vulnerable Hex. Hex hits two of the bigger men in the chest with his boots as he quickly works to regains his footing fire off two more shots taking out several more members of the village.
"I got four shots left; I don't like yer odds." Hex continues to clear a path to the fire. Cutting down several more cannibals as he makes his way across the room. Their numbers dwindling with each swing of Hex's tomahawk. Hex's blows send body parts flying through the air. Hex's mastery with the tomahawk knows no equal.
Only three villagers remain standing. Hex fires two shots killing two of them. Hex tosses his tomahawk landing it right between the eyes of the last cannibal. Hex walks across the room and pulls the tomahawk from the dead man-eater's head. He walks to the side entrance and retrieves his knife from the back of the fallen villager. Hex walks around the room making sure all of the cannibals have been dispatched. Hex makes his way back to the fire and kicks the spit over sending Griggs body to the floor with a crash. Hex pulls out a large hunting knife and begins sawing at Griggs head. "Damn Griggs I bet you wish I'd just caught you out there in the Pacific Plains." Hex looks the body ever and sees no wounds other then his own sawing on the neck. "Getting cooked alive is definitely no way to go." As Hex finishes sawing through the last bit of Griggs powerful neck he pulls out a bag and stuffs the head into it.
Hex exits the church and whistles for General. The horse trots up the hill as fast as it can glad to know Jonah's alive. The horse had been there for all the bounties and somehow understood one day Jonah wouldn't come out alive. Hex and General walk to the edge of the cliff to view the Midwest. The charred remains of the Great Plains echo back to them. Amber waves of grain replaced by burnt Earth and destruction.
