If only I had cable.
Fortunately neighbors have a DVR so we're just going to watch it when they have free time.
As far as I can tell, most of the characters are completely original. I kind of wish they'd use some more existing Marvel characters. I'd be absolutely giddy if they had Carol Danvers be a hotshot pilot for SHIELD or something.

I liked the pilot, it wasn't amazing but besides Firefly none of Whedon's shows have had amazing openings. As for the characters being original, considering Whedon's tendency to hurt his characters and then kill them off I think it's better they aren't comics characters.

The characters were amazing, but the plot was generic and boring.

Give it time. I'm sure it will pick up. The MCU is too important for marvel and Disney to fuck up now.

Here's a topic for discussion:
Agents of SHIELD seems to be most if not all original characters. The only actual comic character I know of seems to be Maria Hill.
Do you think this series would be better or worse if they stuck to actual canon characters? For example, I thought Jay August Richards' character in the pilot would have made the perfect origin story for Luke Cage/Power Man.

I think the show is in a tough spot in regards to using established canon characters. More people are going to watch the movies than the television series; that much is practically a given. So there's not much incentive to introduce certain characters on tv when it'd have much more of an impact on the silver screen.
That being said, there are plenty of lesser knowns in the Marvel universe that will probably pop up on the show from time to time. I just wouldn't hold my breath on anyone easily recognizable. Not unless they get introduced in a movie first and show up on the series afterwards like Maria Hill.

Rumor has it that Mr. Nick Fury himself Samuel L. Jackson might be on tonights episode. Confirmed, along with what I think is a Mass Effect reference.
