First off, I'm a pretty big planetary fan so I feel like I'm going to enjoy this series and how you go about the premise of Planetary, especially with easter eggs that might/might not be there (Hark! Am i overthinking that you mean the Hark family?) and while the first issue was okay, the second was a great follow up. It's like a one-two punch, you follow with the jab (no 1) then go with the straight (snowblind) and bam, devastatingly good fun. Though I'm truly waiting for when we get to see you handle The Four I think you will enjoy #3 with your guess. It will be a little while before we see the Four in my take though. We will get there though. #1 was meant to present Jakita and Drummer before Snow took center stage and set up the quakes and Zhark-One. Issue #2 was where things were meant to really get going with Snow being the engine that drove things. Star-I agree about the expository dialogue, for me it was a necessary evil and I prefer it to be through dialogue than through narration, so I went that route. Three is done and edited and waiting to go, but 4 is giving me fits. I am on my fourth plot for the issue, 2 of the previous ones became the plots for #6 and #7 now, as I felt the revelations in those issues would come too soon if they were in #4. November has been a writing loss so far, as I have been fighting a chess cold and muddled on cold meds unable to put coherent thoughts to keyboard for 3 days now. Feeling a little better tonight so we will see how it goes when I sit down to try to do some writing later after the Cowboys-Falcons game. -M

A chess cold? Do you have pawns coming out your nose? Rook in your throat?

A chess cold? Do you have pawns coming out your nose? Rook in your throat? Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to learn I had a pawn lodged in each nostril the way I felt the last couple of days. Note to self, read before posting even on simple messages, remember you are a lousy typist!!!! -M PS sorry star, I hit modify instead of quote the first time by mistake, apparently I am suffering vision impairment as well.

i'm a bit envious and in awe of how much you have prepared
I'd been studying for a certification test these past few weeks so I'd just add bits and pieces to my story. I'm now aiming to get on your level
someday

My New Year's Resolution for 2012 was to write a minimum of 5K words a week, whether it was actual manuscripts, outlines, character sketches, etc. whatever. That was before I discovered this site and joined. I also wanted to write exclusively fiction after writing in the academic and game design field for quite a few years. I've only missed my goal 2 weeks so far this year, but have still averaged closer to 8K a week overall. It has been spread over a number of different projects, but I did spend quite a bit of the month between the demise of the previous UDCU and the launch of this one laying some groundwork for this series since I was pretty sure no one else would claim the title. I did a little groundwork for a couple of alternatives as well, but not as much as for Planetary, so once the draft was done, I was able to hit the ground running since most of my prep work was already done. Since my wife and I are mostly homebodies and I gave up video games cold turkey before the turn of the millennium, I have plenty of time to work on my writing, one of the "perks" if you will of being the old guy set in his ways -M

Man, I like hearing stuff like this, people's backgrounds and all that. I read it in the meet and greet but still it's nice to hear it all.
Planetary was a helluva inspired choice and you gave up video games cold turkey? that's SRS willpower, we talking hal jordan status right there

I haven't owned a system since the original Nintendo system, and I watched a roommate piss his life away playing video games whenever he wasn't working, and decided I was not going there-I occasionally play when visiting friends or a game of cribbage or chess against the computer when I am trying to think through a plot or character point, but no game systems in the house. My wife and I both agree thye are way too much of a time suck, though the temptation is there.

Just for the sake of conversation, the decision to do Planetary came when I was considering other archaeologist themed characters and ran across Warren Ellis' original pitch for Planetary online. Reading his pitch got me thinking how I might execute it differently and then I started thinking about the term Planetary and it's other genre contexts, which was the genesis for my take on the whole shebang.

Ahh okay, I like the thought process behind your choice. Speaking of archaeological characters, since we've got hawkman as a title here, do you think we'll see anything related to him or Adam Strange?
I liked the mention of Adrian Chase as a field operative too, so props for that

buck and I have talked a lot about Hawkman and have joked about potential relationship between the Thanagarian Hawkmen and the Hawkmen of Mongo since I am using the Flash Gordon mythos, but our plans don't quite synch up, so I don't think you will see anything of that nature.
The archaeological characters I was toying with all got claimed, and so far no plans for any of them to show up in Planetary. Much like Ellis' Planetary took place behind the curtains of the Wildstorm U, I plan to keep Ultimate Planetary in the same vein, so you will see glimpses like Mayor Hundred's plans in the newscast on Drummer's tablet, but very few direct crossovers with the more mainstream DCU, at least for a while.

aw shucks!
and I'm cool with you keeping Planetary behind the curtains in the UDCU, since that is part of the appeal, and shout-outs (like the newscast) are always welcome

I want more from Jakita is my only complaint. I feel like I've learned more about Snow in the first few scene he was in then I have about her in two issues. Drums fire alarm analogy was pretty good. Drums is coming along nicely as well.

Drums is coming along nicely as well. I am afraid I will have to pull out the dreaded wait and see on Jakita. Her revelation is going to be a slow burn, and tied very closely to the secret history. It will come though, it will come... -M

I figured as much with you, but I wanted to point it out in case you were oblivious to it.
I do have Next Sunday marked on the calendar by the way.

Continues to be good and intriguing. Again, not a fan of the unrealistic exposition in the dialogue, but I guess its a choice you're sticking with so I won't bother mentioning it again.
I do think you introduced too many characters at once. There were names and faces thrown at us in rapid succession. No way that's gonna stick unless I read it over a couple times.
Otherwise great issue. The intrigue and mystery continues to unfold. Keep em coming.

Two notes Star:
1) I am writing 2 to 3 issues ahead, so when #2 was posted and folks like you read and commented on it, #3 was already done and "in the can" ready to be posted and I was working on issues 4 and 5. So comments made are read and taken into consideration, but any choice to implement or act upon them will not be seen for a few issues due to the lead time I am keeping on the issues.
2) It is a bit of a conscious choice. In one sense I am trying to emulate some of the paradigms of the wide screen comics of Wildstorm and Warren Ellis in particular with this series. One of those was an absence of narrative captions. All information was presented either visually or through dialogue. Since I have no visuals to rely on, what narrative non-dialogue prose I am using is meant to emulate the visuals, providing what the readers or the characters "see" and am choosing not to provide narrative exposition. The only "captions" I am using are the silver text to delineate time and place for scenes and scene changes. Not sure if I will stick with this- it is an experiment in style, and I will look at the body of the first batch of episodes when the last of the first batch is posted in early December and see overall how the technique is working and decide whether it will continue to be used or whether I will try a different technique in the second batch of episodes.
As for too many characters, I hear you. I am working on a Planetary Guide, a sort of Who's Who and What's What Guide that will be stickeyed in the Planetary forum, and updated periodically, but I wanted to get a few issues up before I did so.
Both Jim Wilder and John Stone will feature prominently in issue #4, and the Century Children will be a recurring element throughout the series.
I will say this aside from Elijah and Anna, one of the other century children has appeared in the present in one of the first few issues but was not obviously labelled as such unless you caught the clue.
I appreciate the feedback from everyone.

Ok mini contest time...a virtual kewpie doll no-prize to the first person who can find the thematic link between the titles of every issue in Season One of Planetary (titles for the first 6 episodes can be found on the Episode Guide stickeyed in the Planetary thread). Buck and Miller are ineligible to guess as they have peaked behind the curtain already...

Give the man a virtual kewpie doll. It's a nod to Warren Ellis saying in his original pitch for Planetary that each issue was going to be like a 3 minute pop song. Though some of the song titles I chose might not qualify as pop...
