EDIT (8/12/14) - These rules are going to undergo some revision soon. They are, for the most part, still in effect, but hopefully will be made a little more user-friendly to read and understand, and hopefully not too restrictive to our writers. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask, either on the board itself, or PM DiscipleofBob, Adrini, or Drake with questions.
Note: These rules are subject to change. However, as in the United States Constitution, Ex Post Facto laws will be banned. We will never enforce new rules retroactively. Also, all new rules will be announced in the Author’s Discuss board, so check back regularly.
1. Writers may claim their first title at any time. Writers will be allowed to claim additional titles after meeting certain benchmarks. After writing six issues of their first title, writers are eligible to claim a second title. After at least two issues for the second title have been posted, a writer may claim a third title with some restrictions.
2. Writers may be involved in up to three titles, as long as one of them is either a Continuation of an existing title, or a Co-Written title. A Continuation means you take a completed or dropped title that has remained in continuity and continue where the previous writer left off.
3. No original characters, aside from extras.
1) All claims are made in the Monthly Claim Thread (MCT). The availability of characters can be checked in the Masters Claim List (MCL). All claims must be made prior to your first issue being posted as they will be frozen until you are eligible for new claims.
2) New titles have may have up to 20 claims, not including Wallpaper. If you're doing a Continuation, you may choose to create a new claims list, dropping any unwanted claims from the previous list. (If dropped claims have been used, their role in the Continuity is still honored.) Alternatively, you may keep the entire old claims list, but you only get three additional claims and cannot make additional claims until you get two issues posted.
3) After you’ve published two issues of your title you will be given two monthly claims. These claims can only be used for titles over the two issue mark.
4) If you write two or more titles you are granted one additional claim. All claiming rules still apply to this claim.
5) Reclaims only count for one-half of a claim.
6) You can earn up an additional claim per month by posting at least three reviews for a chapter that was posted in the current month. Reviews must be of substance meaning you need to contribute more then I liked it or I didn’t like it. You cannot earn more than one review per month this way, and the reviews must be for issues posted no earlier than the month before the present month.
7) You can only make claims when all of your titles are updated for the month.
8) Check the monthly claims thread for information on claims formatting.
9) All series that are claimed must be of an ongoing nature. If you wish to do a miniseries you can, but you can only utilize characters you have claimed or that other writers have granted you permission to use from their claim list.
10) Sidekicks, legacy characters, major villains, and closely associated characters are not eligible to be claimed, except with the permission by the main character’s writer.
Note: This essentially gives writers of certain mythos limited rights on connected characters. However, these rights are not indefinite and the writer is expected to claim the character in a reasonable time frame. This time frame will vary from case to case but will normally be within two months of being eligible for additional claims.
11) Some characters and teams are expected to carry their own title, or at least establish their own ongoing title before they can be used in a different role in another
12) Another instance characters might not be available to claim is when they are considered a board wide claim, which is a rare instance, these characters are not eligible to be claimed by individuals but can be used with permission.
13) Claims are expected to be used in a timely manner. All claimed characters must be either used or reclaimed within 10 issues or months (whichever comes first). If characters fail to appear and haven’t been reclaimed by the respective issues they will be returned to the unclaimed character pool.
14) Some groups and organizations have few significant members and they can be claimed using only one slot (i.e H.I.V.E and the Royal Flush Gang). For other groups, you will need to claim at least two members of the group and the group itself and this will grant you access to the remainder of the group (i.e The Great Ten or GCPD). Still, more may be set up so that you can gain a few minor named members (i.e. League of Assassins, Brotherhood of Evil). When in doubt, ask.
Titles are expected to be updated once a month. While there isn’t an official length requirement it’s expected that you tell a full chapter of an ongoing story. If you are unable to post a chapter in a month for any reason, you need to let the admins know. You will not lose your title or be forced to post additional chapters to "make up" for last month. But you do have to stay in contact with the admins or risk losing your title. Repeated infractions will also likely lead to your title being dropped, but the final say of how long is up to the admins.
