New School pt. 1
by Ryan
"Excuse me miss? Are you sleeping in my class?" a voice echoed through the lecture hall. The entire class turned around to see who the professor was directing his attention to. A young woman sat, slumped over her desk fast asleep. Her raven dark hair was pulled up in a ponytail, baggy sweat pants and a t-shirt that had Metropolis University written across the chest. "If you’re going to sleep I'm going to have to ask you to leave." The young woman slowly sat up in her chair, to see all eyes locked on her.
"Did I miss something?" She said picking up her pen.
"Please leave." The professor said as he folded his arms. The young woman picked up her books and slid through the aisle. "Next time I'll expect you to stay wake miss..." The young woman turned back to the professor.
"Zatanna." she pushed the lecture room door open and walked out. She walked down the hall and stopped at a vending machine. "Maybe a little chocolate will wake me up." She pulled a dollar out of her purse and fed it into the machine. She punched in the candy bar she wanted but nothing happened. "Oh come on." She cried out. "Seriously how can this day get any worse? I just wanted something to eat." As she stormed off every candy bar dropped down into the holding area of the machine

Zatanna made her way back to her dorm. A dry erase board on the door read "Julie & Zee" she opened to see a blonde girl sitting at her computer. “Class already over? Julie asked.
Zatanna sat on the corner of Julie’s desk. “I kinda fell asleep and he kicked me out."
“Zee you can't be doing that. You need that class to graduate.”
“I know I know....I just haven't heard from my dad in a week. I've left him a few messages and he hasn't called me back."
"I’m sure he's just been busy with the shows and traveling. I mean he is the world famous John Zatara." Julie rolled away from her computer and propped her feet up on her bed. "Oh you know that guy I've been eyeing that lives down the hall?" Zatanna nodded. "He totally held the elevator for me."
Zatanna rolled her eyes and laughed. “Girl just ask him out already. You've spent the last 4 months giving him googly eyes. Just do it already."
"I don't want to seem desperate." Julie stood up and began checking herself out in the mirror.
“But you are.” Zatanna laughed. “You just want to be asked out by any guy.” Just then there was a knock at the door. Zatanna walked over to the door and opened it. “Hey Liz come on in.” Zatanna motioned her in. The girl had a hand full of books and was struggling to keep them all in her hand.
“I can't stay; I just wanted to see if Julie wanted to go see that new Johnny Depp movie?" Julie stopped looking at herself in the mirror and looked over at Liz. "I wish I could I have an accounting final to study for. But thanks anyway.”
"Maybe some other time.” Liz's face turned to disappointment. Liz walked away.
“Ok was that weird or is it just me?” Zatanna said closing the door.
“Just a little. You mention someone asking me out and that happens.” Julie began digging through her closet looking for a pair of heels. “Where are these things?”
“I know I should just ask for some pizza. I'm starving.” Just then there was another knock at the door. Zatanna and Julie looked at each other. “Who is it?” Zatanna asked.
“Delivery.” A voice shouted. Zatanna opened the door to see a delivery man standing there holding Chinese food.
“Ho…How much?” Zatanna stuttered completely confused.
“Free…Just take it I have other deliveries.” The man said as he handed over the food and walked off.
“Anything I say seems to keep happening. I’m beginning to freak out.” Peered out of the door and down the hall.
“I was pretty hungry.” Julie said as she held up the heels she had been looking for. “I love this song.” She said pointing to the TV.
“Really? I can’t stand that song. Turn it off.” Zatanna walked over to her closest to pick out something to wear instead of her baggy sweats.
“Umm..Zee?” Zatanna looked over at Julie who had a look shock on her face. Zatanna heard something buzzing and turned her head to see the TV screen go black and start smoking. “Quick unplug it!” Julie screamed. Zatanna and Julie stood in silence for the next few minutes. Julie finally broke the silence.
“Any idea what the hell just happened?” Julie took the food and set it on the table. Zatanna stood in the middle of the room dumbfounded.
“I...I need to call my dad. Maybe he can explain what’s going on.” Zatanna grabbed her cell and hit her dad on speed dial. “Come on dad please answer.”
----
A faint ringing could be heard behind a dumpster in a dark alley in Gotham. The rats could be heard scurrying from the sound of the phone ringing. The phone stopped and went to voice mail. Footsteps could be heard walking down the alley. A cloaked figure stopped and surveyed the dingy alley. The blinking of the phone caught the figures eye. A gloved hand reached down and picked up the phone. It began scrolling through the call list and saw the last incoming call was named Zatanna. The cloaked figure slid the phone in his pocket and faded back into the darkness.
---
“Dammit he didn't answer. This is just freaking me out.” Zatanna took her hair out of her ponytail and plopped down on her bed. "I almost don’t want to say anything else, who knows what, will happen.” She looked over at Julie who was eating the Chinese food and sighed.
“What? I didn’t want it to go to waste.” Julie said taking a big bite of an egg roll. Zatanna closed her eyes and laid down.
“I just wish I could talk to my dad. He would be able to explain everything that's been going on. I just can't imagine it all being a coincidence ya know?” There was silence. “Are you listening to me Julie?” She sat up and saw Julie frozen in place. Julie? She jumped up and raced over. She waived her hand in front of Julie’s face. “Did I do this?”
“I did.” A booming voice said behind her. Zatanna turned around to see a cloaked figure wearing a suit, fedora and a medallion hanging around his neck.
“Who are you?” Zatanna said slowly backing away.
“I have no name, but those who have seen me, have called me The Phantom Stranger. There is no time for pleasantries. Your father needs your help or he could be lost to you forever...”
