New School pt. 3
Light was shining through the crack of the curtains in Zatanna’s bedroom. She was curled up with one arm swung over the side of the bed with her eyes as wide as they could be. She had been up for most of the night thinking about what she was getting herself into.
Everything was just kind of thrown at her and up until yesterday she had no idea magic actually existed. All she could think about was her dad and how he was captured by some sort of demon prince. It was up to her to save him. She rolled over with her dark hair covering half of her face. She could see through the split in the curtains at the sun slowly rising.
“Sniatruc nepo.” She muttered as the curtains swung open and light filled the new magically renovated room. Shadowcrest was her family’s ancestral house but it still felt foreign to her. She slowly swung her feet around and pushed the covers off her. She stretched her arms out and let out a long yawn. “It’s now or never.” She stood up and wondered what she was going to wear since she didn’t bring any clothes with her. “Wen sehtolc.” Her new pajamas faded away in favor of a pair of jeans and a black and red t-shirt. She knew Julie that was probably worried sick that she hadn’t come back yet. She thought maybe she’d pop in to let her know she’s alright before heading out.
She walked over to the mirror without losing stride. "Rorrim latrop ot mrod." And walked through the mirror.
---
Julie stood in the middle of her room pacing back and forth in a tight grey skirt and a blue shirt that hung off her shoulders and her blonde hair in a ponytail. She had been on the phone all morning with campus police trying to get them take her claim seriously.
"Look, for the last time one minute she was here and the next she wasn't....No I have not been drinking....Ok maybe a little last night but still, I know when my friend..." Just then Zatanna walked through the mirror in the corner of the dorm room. "Zee!" Julie cried out. "Where the hell have you been?" She asked dropping the phone and giving Zatanna a big hug.
"It’s been a crazy night; I just wanted to come by to let you know I was..." Julie interrupted.
"Wait did you just walk out of the mirror?” Julie let go of Zatanna. Zatanna had a slight grin on her face.
“Yeah about that. You know all those weird things that happened yesterday? “Julie nodded. “Well it’s actual magic. No pallor tricks, no rabbits out of hats, pure magic. Watch This.” Zatanna walked over to the center of the room and looked at the dirty kitchen. “Nehctik naelc flesrouy”. Julie stood there dumbstruck as the cereal box closed itself up and floated to the top of the fridge, the dirty dishes began washing themselves and putting themselves in the dish drain and a rag feverishly cleaned the counter tops as if a maid was scrubbing the counter. Julie was speechless.
Phantom Stranger appeared in the corner of the room. “It’s time.” Julie screamed and jumped behind a chair not knowing that he was with Zatanna.
“Oh don't worry he's with me." Zatanna said reassuringly. "His name is...uhh...You know we really should give you a name. James, Nick...Javier???"
“I am in need of no name. We must go.” Zatanna was disappointed he didn’t want an actual name. The Stranger waved his hand in front of him creating a door. Julie’s jaw was left open not fully understanding what was going on.
“Look I’ll fill you in on everything when I get back…Just pray for me ok?” Zatanna said walking through the door Stranger just made. Julie nodded slowly in agreement as Stranger walked through and the doorway vanished.
----
Zatanna still hadn’t gotten use to the feeling of teleporting yet, she felt as if she could be sick. It took her a minute to gather her composure before she was able to realize she was standing in the middle of an abandoned amusement park. Everything was run down; rides were rusted and broken down, spider webs seemed to cover everything. Trash could be seen blowing in the wind like tumble weeds.
“Where are we?” Zatanna ask leaning down to remove a piece of trash that had blown up against her leg.
“The entrance to the Realm.” Stranger said pointing off into the distance. He began walking towards the building. As they got closer Zatanna was getting chills down her spine, she was beginning to get nervous. The Stranger came to a sudden stop and Zatanna bumped into him. “We’re here.” He said with his monotone voice.
Zatanna looked up to see a massive funhouse with the entrance in the shape of a clowns head. The white face, bright red nose and blue circles around the clown’s eyes had been slowly fading away but still gave Zatanna the creeps.
“Seriously a clown? The entrance to a place called Realm of the Dead is in the mouth of a rusted down clown head?” She said in disbelief.
The Stranger walked closer but seemed to hit a barrier just before the entrance. “Please stand with me.” Zatanna hesitantly stood next to Stranger as he placed his hand on her shoulder and being chanting. She couldn’t make out what he was saying, but knew it wasn’t English. She felt a slight tingle going through her body, from her finger tips down to her toes when a quick flash of light appeared from in front of them. “It’s done, we may enter.” Not wavering he walked forward into the rusted mouth of the clown.
“Wait that’s all you needed me for?” She asked but the Stranger was already at the entrance. “Fine…” Zatanna took a deep breath and jogged to catch up to Stranger. They passed the mirror maze and some distorting mirrors. The fake clown statues that lined the maze looked as if their eyes were following her every move. The smell of sulfur began filling the air it began getting thicker and thicker the longer they walked. She realized they had been walking for at least 15 minutes and thought there was no way this place was this big. The Stranger turned down a corridor and at the end there was a red tinge off in the distance.
“We are close. I can feel your fathers energy; this way.” Stranger could sense John Zatara’s magical aura but it was fading .The Stranger didn’t waver one bit as he continued into the Realm of the Dead. Zatanna could feel her muscles tighten and tried to focus but she could hear screams coming from off in the distance of what sounded like people being tortured. She didn’t even want to imagine that one of the screams was her fathers. The Stranger turned and quickly grabbed Zatanna and covered her with his cloak. She could hear the footsteps growing closer and closer. Strangers cloak must be shielding them from being seen she thought. She could hear voices as whatever they were walked by. She couldn’t understand anything they were saying, it was some other language. Stranger soon lifted his cloak and they continued on. Bones littered the pathway and the screams only got louder the closer they got.
They turned a corner and Zatanna caught a glimpse of her dad strapped down to a slab of rock in the middle of the room. The night sky could be seen over head just waiting for the full moon to appear. “DAD!!!” She cried out as she ran off to free him from his restraints.
“Wait!” Stranger yelled not wanting her to get close. But before she could get to him she felt as if something had punched her in the stomach sending her flying backwards and onto the ground.
The sound of clapping echoed throughout the room. Stranger and Zatanna both looked around to find where the sound was coming from. When from the corner a well-dressed man wearing a dark gray suit appeared. His black hair slicked back, with a thin goatee, his skin had a nice even tan and his eyes were a deep blue. Zatanna finally was able to stand back up but the pain in her stomach was so jarring she couldn’t speak.
“Welcome, welcome.” The man said still slowly clapping. “I’m glad you all could make it. I wasn’t expecting company but I’ll gladly accommodate you.” The man said with an English accent. Zatanna was still trying to catch her breath as the Phantom Stranger began chanting to himself again. “No no no.” The man said with an annoyed tone. He snapped his fingers and the Phantom Stranger seemed to be pulled back into a black hole. Zatanna watched as he struggled to get free, but whoever this was, his powers were to strong and the Stranger vanished into the darkness. “My world, my rules…Oh, my apologies; I didn’t introduce myself. I am Ligur.” He said bowing with a smug grin.
Before Zatanna could speak, he interrupted. “You are Zatanna Zatara; daughter of Zatara. You’ve just recently discovered your ancestry and here to save your father. However, I’m sorry to say that will not happen.” He again snapped his fingers and the ground exploded with what looked like rock arms. They grabbed Zatanna and one covered her mouth to keep her from speaking and the others held her down. “Here I thought I was going to siphon just one…” His eyes began to flame as his suit began to burn off and he transformed into something inhuman. Horns grew from his forehead, his ears became pointed and his skin turned a devilish red. “Now my power will double.” He said grinning.
