Ever After pt.1
Zatanna was finally back into a semi normal routine at school. It'd had been a few weeks since she had rescued her dad and pretty much saved the world. She stood at the window of her 3rd story dorm room with her arms folded watching the moon slowly rise off in the distance. She could hear Julie scrounging through the drawers looking for the skirt that went with her Halloween costume. She knew the highlight of Julie's semester was always the costume party the Kappa Delta Sigma fraternity threw. This was her one excuse to dress like a skank, but it was all in good fun.
Zatanna stood thinking about how everything had changed. Ligur was still out there and vowing to get back at her. Her dad and Phantom Stranger were off trying to stop some Gargoyles that had come alive at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. It was all going to be different she thought.
"FOUND IT!" Julie exclaimed. "Give me one sec to throw this on and we're ready to go." Julie was wearing a Snow White costume that was three times to short for her. Julie straightened the blue bow on her head and pressed the wrinkles out of her skirt with her hands. "Ok, I'm ready. What do you think?" Julie said posing with a black wig on and a red apple in her hand.
"You'll definitely be turning some heads with that costume."
"Oh whatever, look at you." Zatanna's costume was a take on her dad's show attire. She had on a tight white corset, red bow tie, black briefs with a coat tailed jacket, fishnet stockings and heeled boots that came up to knees. She just knew if her dad saw her in this he would die.
"Thanks, I so glad this costume party is once a year, I can't imagine running around in this all the time." Zatanna said wiggling uncomfortably.
"Alright let's go have some fun, you need to have a fun night." Julie let Zatanna walk ahead of her and they made their way to the party.
---
Zatanna and Julie were shivering on the freezing October night as they walked down one of the manyt sidewalks at Metropolis University. "Tell me why didn't we bring a coat?" Julie asked as her teeth chattered against one another. Zatanna looked around to see if anyone was near by.
"I got us covered. Mraw stekcaj revoc su." Two brown coats appeared from out of no where and slowly rested themselves on their shoulders. "That should hold us over." She said pulling the coat closed.
“I really cannot believe the girl I’ve known since 2nd grade can do magic. I just can’t believe it.” Julie shook her head in disbelief.
“You just need to remember to not tell anyone, got it?” Zatanna’s face as serious as Julie had ever seen.
“I know, I know...Promise...” She held out her pinky. “Pinky swear.” Zatanna rolled her eyes and laughed.
“Pinky swear.”
They could hear the music off in the distance and the glow of the front porch as people were lined up trying to get inside the fraternity. There were all sorts of costumes, some were dressed as firemen, policemen and a criminal and even dressed as Booster Gold. "Don't tell me we have got to stand in this line?" Zatanna said begrudgingly.
"This one is on me." Julie made her way past the line and up the steps to the front door. The young gentleman at the door who was dressed as the vampire leaned over as Julie whispered something in his ear. His eyes got extremely big as Julie twirled a piece of hair from her black wig and gave him a playful look. The guy nodded and Julie waved her up to the door. Zatanna wondered what she had told the guy, but was afraid to ask. She might have had magical abilities but Julie could flirt with anyone and get her way. "See I told ya this one was on me."
As they entered the music was blaring and people were crammed into every nook and cranny of the house. Zatanna wasn't much of a party girl but she was here to let loose for once, what's the harm in that she thought. People were dancing, others were just chillin' talking while having some drinks. Julie was dragging Zatanna by the hand as they made their way through the crowd. The costumes on some of these people were ridiculous she thought, but considering what she was wearing she couldn't talk.
"Oh look it's Andy. Let me go say hey and I'll be right back." Julie let go of her hand and made her way to the bar area. Zatanna felt a tug on her coattail.
"Did it hurt?" a squeaky voice said. Zatanna turned around to see a young boy who had to at least a freshman; dressed in a wolf costume with part of his blondish hair sticking out of the wolf cowl.
“Hurt? Zatanna asked confused.
“When you fell off...I mean fell from heaven." the young boy slapped his forehead in embarrassment. Zatanna rolled her eyes.
“Nice try...next time you might want to make sure your date doesn't hear you.” She said pointing to young girl dressed as Red Riding Hood who standing directly behind him.
“Ahh man!” He said as Red Riding Hood hauled off and smacked him as she stormed off through the crowd. “Wait...Come back!” He begged. Zatanna watched as the young wolf boy pleaded for the girl to take him back. Zatanna turned around and walked off in search of Julie, she knew she had to be around here somewhere. She caught a glimpse of her out of the corner of her eye. Julie had been in the middle of the room dancing with the guy that was at the door earlier in the night. Zatanna grabbed a drink from the table and stood against the wall watching as everyone else seemed to be having fun, except her.
As the night went on the crowd began getting to be to big for the house. Zatanna was ready to go, every guy who talked to her only wanted one thing and if the creepy guy in the wolf costume didn't stop staring at her, she was going to turn him into a labradoodle. The night was just dragging on and not a end in sight.
Julie had been having the time of her life, she had been dancing with every guy she knew and didn’t care how drunk she was. She knew Zee had her back and wouldn’t let anything happened to her. The only thing she knew about the guy she was dancing with was that his name was James or was it John she thought. James, it was definitely James, but it didn’t really matter. This was a once a year thing. Just then she felt a tap on her the thigh. She looked down to see two small men that only came up to her waist in old raggedy clothes with rope for belts standing beside her. Both of the small men had beards almost as long as themselves.
"Oh my god you are sooooo cute." Julie said clearly drunk. kneeling down to see him. The small man held out his hand with what looked like glitter. “What’s that?” she asked as he gently blew it in her face. Julie yawned and fell to the floor; asleep. The house was so crowded know one noticed except the young guy she had been dancing with.
“Hey! What did you do?” He asked the two small men who were now standing over Julie. The other small man reached out and touched James on the arm. James stumbled back and into another couple dancing. “What the hell’s your problem?” James asked, but before the guy could answer, James had punched the guy in the face so hard his Booster Gold glasses shattered and flew off his face. James jumped on top of him and started to pummeling him for no apparent reason. A few friends tried to grabbed James but he swung at them as well.
Everyone at the party began crowding around to watch the fight between the two guys. Zatanna saw the fight and knew Julie had been over there and rushed over to see if she had been caught in the middle of it. She noticed Julie wasn’t there and saw what James was doing to the poor guy.
“Mlac felsrouy.” She said as James began to snap out of it, trying to shake the cobwebs from his head. “Where’s Julie?” She asked as she grabbed him by his collar.
“Som..some little dudes took her.” He said rubbing his head in confusion.
“Julie! Julie!.” Zatanna pushed her way through the crowd and finally made it to the front door. As she opened it she saw a door frame seemly built into a tree just outside the house. Before she could act she could see a bright light emanating from the door as it opened. All Zatanna could make out were the two tiny men dragging her through the door. Zatanna watched as one of the men reached back to shut the door, when she finally caught a good glimpse of him. "Where those dwarfs?"
