There was one thing I was a little confused over though. I'm not sure if I missed it, but does Sarah Essen know that Batman is Bruce? She seemingly called his phone and he answered in a "normal" voice, yet she referred to his at Batman. I'm not sure if it was mentioned earlier or what and I missed it. Ahem...wait and see Well let's give a hint....Gordon knows Bruce is Batman. Gordon is romantically involved with Essen and is the one who introduced Essen to Batman establishing a contact for him in the GCPD. SO the question is how discreet is Gordon and how much does he trust Essen? On the flip side...she called Alfred's phone not Bruce's, Alfred took care that Bruce's name was not heard on the line when he called him over to take the call... That particular phone may be Alfred's or it may be "The Batphone" in a more modern technological form-would a big red phone in a pastry dish really be the Batphone in 2011? Would it be a landline to the cave? Also notice what Alfred said when the call came in.... Now what is the answer about what Essen knows and doesn't know... Wait and See! -M

Not sure if the title is a typo or not but it works either way. Heavy is the head that wears the ground.
In other news well done. Deadshpt was fantastic and everything miller said.

I'm not big on Batman being extremely rough towards criminals like in the first scene (Maybe Ol'Frank Miller ruined it for me or something), but aside from that everything was great. I like how it's not just Batman Batman Batman, instead incorporating other Gotham characters. Helps create a living breathing city.

Ugh, definitely a typo, can't believe I missed it, but oh well, fixed now. It is Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown...Thanks for drawing my attention to it. sigh.... Glad people are digging the book so far. The broader focus was definitely one of the goals of the book. Liquid-as for Bat's brutality towards the criminals..well my Batman is fairly Dark, but I am hoping not to go to Milleresque extremes, as much as I like his DKR and Year One. Still, Ultimate Bruce is a soldier, was special ops,and as you will see later did a lot of covert work in Afghanistan and other places in the Middle East, so his methods are not going to be gentle, especially when the League of Assassins is involved. -M

I figured as much but the head that wears the ground would be quite heavy itself.

I'm hoping you get to #6 soon and if the first three issues are any indication, it's going to be a fun ride getting there! Our characters are made for a crossover down the line.

I'll admit, your outline didn't really impress me since I've been seeing them a lot lately from you and the following issues have been lukewarm with a few gems in them at best. Nothing wrong with them, they just missed that "spark.". But this? You've rediscovered that magical awesomeness from the first issue of BoM that gives your work life.
I know your Batman more than most people since we're trying to work towards a way to slowly integrate the Ultimate Batfamily and loved the interrogation scene. I know what the Leagues done to him. I know what they've put him through. I can feel why he's being that way. I hope the others too will come to appreciate it as you reveal more of the missing five years and why he is known as "Warrior" instead of Detective.
The dynamic between Alfred and Bruce was great and though I felt the family bit at the board meeting was a bit heavy handed. I did so love Bruce owning them though. That was pure win and serves to remind people that this title is more than just Bruce has a pretty lady on his arm, does Batman stuff, repeat. This Bruce is showing us all of his life (in part because of Alfred). Wasn't a fan of Tatsu's attitude at the airport. Felt more like a Robin's POV than Katana. But I'll wait and see on that.
Finally, that's what the Cobblepots get for taking a page out of Game of Thrones. Take that, bitches!!! If you end up having a funeral for them anywhere or it's mentioned, feel free to have Kate and Dr. Elliot attending (though obviously not together... Two gingers should never mix... plus she's y'know, gay.)

Read all three issues. I do like your take so far. Similar yet different. The extremes to the Bruce persona are nice since it allows him to be serious instead of a foolish playboy yet still avoid suspicion. And its all very well written.
My two complaints, first minor and second less so:
1. The Lannisters as Cobblepots was kinda distracting. At least they're dead so it won't be ongoing. And there was no incest. Or is that another wait and see...? Oh and I do hope the obvious reveal doesn't turn out to be so obvious.
2. Feels very rushed. I'd like to see you allow some events and scenes breathe a bit. Maybe you'll end up doing a lot of flashbacks, but as written I didn't feel like I had time to really get to know this world and these characters. Maybe its just me, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
Otherwise a very well done start that I'm looking forward to. Keep em coming.

Haha I'm a bit behind because I just read number two, but by the comments of the others, I can't wait to read #3! Good job, I liked the Talia and Ra's scenes. I'm also looking forward to seeing how Damian plays out.

Ultimate Detective Comics #4 is up. Heavy is the Head That Wears the Crown Part 2: The Heirs Apparent.
I had hoped to get this issue up in time to double up in May, but it just didn't pan out that way. I may double up in June instead if I can, we'll see.
Hope you enjoy, and look forward to comments, criticism, complaints, or other reactions.

I liked the issue, but one complaint: Bruce's reaction at the end. At first he seems upset, distant etc and then moments later he's jumping out of his chair and smiling wickedly. It seems less like he's had a eureka moment and more vengeful. Maybe it's just the punching his hand but it seems a bit over the top and makes him less of a man happy to finally put the death of his mentor to rest and more of a guy ready to yell "LET'S ROCK AND ROLL!" like an 80's action movie character. Not a major problem, but just my 2 cents on that specific bit. I may have missed it, but how to Katana and Speedy know about the others guardians crime fighting?

Was a good issue. Some proof reading errors but nothing too glaring.
Its interesting that Tatsu and Mia know Bruce's secret. I imagine that Tatsu found out and told Mia, which is such a dick move. The flashbacks were good. It'll be interesting to see how your Bruce deals with the possibility of really avenging his parents.
Keep em coming.

I'm trying to think of what this issue reminds me of or what your Batman as a whole reminds me of. There's hints of the Nolan Batman, The original Animated Series, a little of what Snyder's doing. There's also a bit of 70s and 80s Bat (Pre-Crisis, when he was just darkening up).
In a lot of ways, this is a perfect amalgamation of a lot of Bat history while doing something fresh and new (the military angle). So kudos to that, although I'd love to see some Campy 60s throwback stuff.
As for this issue, I loved the twist with Oswald not inheriting the family wealth. Didn't see that one coming. And I loved the opener with Mia and Tatsu. Mia Deerden is one of my favorite characters, so it's nice to see her show up in the UDCU. And it's cool tying her into the Batman Universe.
Keep it up!

Well he hasn't appeared "on screen" yet, but I did nod to the 60's TV show with the Gotham Police Chief being named O'Hara. One of my earliest exposures to Batman (though not my first) was View Master reels of the Adam West TV show that came in a Superfiends set (it was also my first exposure to 60's Marvel as I had reels of old Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America stories.
(Hmm, I can picture all the young'uns scrambling to the google to find out what a view master is!).

I actually know what a viewmaster is. I actually had one. Loved the Star Trek slides (the first thing that got me into science fiction at the age of 3). But I concur with the 60s show being one of the earliest exposures to Batman. The film came on TV when I was younger and my parents taped it. That and Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory were two movies that I completely wore out when I was younger. I actually ended up getting the film on DVD not too long ago and it still holds up.
But yeah, I'm just a general Batman fan from the grim and dark Nolan interpretation to the really campy stories with Batman finding a Batman on another planet. That's probably why I'm such a fan of Morrison's run. Never before has a writer tried to put all of it together.
But again, love your work and it's definitely up to par with the quality that the Caped Crusader deserves.

#3 i THINK was the best one so far. Because it really fits in with the plots with the Cobblepots , the appearance of Deadshot and Silver . I really loved the plots here and what we saw with Lawton. So I give it props man.
