That's what I was trying to get at. I figure, you lower the claims people get more selective over their characters, which opens up characters that weren't claimed for other writers. Then we don't really need that rule in place. You don't HAVE to claim 17 characters though, you could just claim 12. For example, in my head I've thought of a few things I could do with various titles, and in one of them I'd use all my claims within 12 issues with ease. In another I'd only need to claim about 10 characters to see me through two or three arcs. There's no rule saying you have to claim 17/20, that's just the max.

I checked and it says if you don't use them within 12 they will have to be reclaimed, so your idea about renewing them already exists.

But what if you want to claim a villain for a story following 12 issues but they are a popular character. The rule strips away your right to plan further than 12 issues basically.

You would then have to use one of your monthly claims to retain said character.

So I just came across this board, thought it was an amazing idea, and saw that you guys are doing a completely new draft. I thought it might be fate, mentioned it to my wife (big Wonder Woman and Green Arrow fan) who DEMANDED that I sign up. So... is it too late for me to sign up? Anyone gonna answer him?

Basically it addresses the constant complaint there are no villains available and that people are hoarding claims without using them.
If you have characters, use them. do a vignette showing the villain plotting or setting their plan in motion-that counts as using the character, essentially have your B and C plots simmering in the background the way comics use to work. If you really have planned out 12 issues or more ahead it is easy to work things like that into your issues.
Second if you are approaching your 12 issue limit and you haven't used the character, use one of your claims to reclaim the character. This lets you control them for another 12 issues, and if you haven't used them within 24 issues then really are you going to? If you have characters available to use and haven't used them, then you don't really need to make new claims. If you have planned ahead, you should already know what you are using and when, and should have adjusted your initial claims to reflect what you had planned to use. Don't claim someone you don't plan to use until issue 13 and not claim someone you plan on using in issue 5.
If you are flying by the seat of your pants and haven't planned ahead, well that's your choice and a valid way to go, but then you just have to use what's available already in your claims or what's out there unclaimed.
The way I see it playing out in terms of enforcement is like this...issue 11 comes out anf you make your claims, an admin looks at the claims and says, you're coming up on all 12, have you used everyone already? If not, do you want to use your claims to claim someone you're going to lose, because once I approve new claims and the issue comes out, you will lose claim for x, y, or z. Claims aren't going to be snatched out from you. You will know and have to make a choice. If you lose characters it will be because you chose not to use them and chose not to use a claim to retain them. You will know from the start how it works, so plan accordingly.
Discipleofbob, you made it in before the deadline, I will add you to the list.

Sorry SK, we were all at work tonight, I just got home and was posting the reply when you posted. I think buck posted from work between tasks just to confirm what someone else had said. -M

Okay the draft window is now closed.
The final list of those signing up is as follows (note this is not the draft order. Miller will be doing the randomizer and posting the draft order when he gets out of work tonight).
1) C_Miller 2) MRP 3) Buck 4) Liquidsword34 5)heroic 6)bkole 7) uncharted 8)jackalope 9) Silentking 10) randomfan 11) froggy 12) Yoda's brother 13) Stardrifter 14) Damian 15) Disciple of Bob
So fifteen writers participating in the draft. If every writer takes hteir full twelve hours it will take 7 1/2 days to complete the draft.

I say once the list is randomized we just start the claims process. Why wait till Friday? At worst just start the 12 hour clock after the first person makes their claims.

If you need to you can send me via PM a list of potential claims I can post for you if your slot comes up on Friday. PM me if you need to work out details of how we can handle it.

At worst just start the 12 hour clock after the first person makes their claims. 1) People may adjust their claims based on where they are in the draft order. They need time to do so. 2) Not everyone checks in every day, so we need to give people time between the posting of the order and when the first slot is up so they have time to see when they will be drafting. They may be in a different time zone, work a different shift, have family commitments, etc. so we have to leave time for them to see the list before we start the draft. -M

Awesome, I hope not to disappoint.
Is there any special ruling on original characters with canon mantles? Like if someone wanted to do a new person as Robin for example? (Not actually intending on that specific example, just curious.)

Not sure on the new character for a legacy mantle. The rules Miller put up said new characters cannot be feature characters in a solo title, and if they appear in a team book cannot make up more than one fifth (a 1:4 ratio of new to existing characters) of the team. If the legacy mantle were a sidekick and the duo were considered a team, it might be a violation of the letter of that rule, but I am not certain. I will run it by Miller if I am awake when he gets out of work tonight and checks in. If not we will discuss it tomorrow and try to have some sort of answer before claims actually start.

The concept I had in mind involved would have one of the villains. Said villain has multiple incarnations already, but none of the current ones quite match the vision I have in mind. Of course all this is moot if I don't get the title I have in mind for the draft, which is likely. I was just curious.

If you want to PM me some specifics so you don't spoil things for everyone else, I might be able to give you a better answer if I had a clearer picture of what you were thinking. If not, it's cool, I will still run it by Miller when I talk to him and get his input.

Froggy: You can send us your claims, but there's a small chance that they won't be available when you actually go to claim, especially in the case of smaller characters like villains and support (although sticking to Static or Grifter, you probably won't have that problem). So if you wanted to give us a couple of extra options like you would in a Fantasy Football auto draft, that would work too.
Star: MRP outlined my points perfectly. I'm trying to get this close to fantasy football and it's always nice to know your draft order so you can develop strategy before you actually start picking players. That and we wanted people to give people time to see their position before the draft actually takes place.
Bob: Hmm... I'd say that's fine depending on certain qualifications. I don't want to be dogmatic one way or the other, but I can't imagine that breaking the rules. But with the Ultimate concept, existing characters can essentially be original characters depending on what you do to them. Just a thought.

Froggy this means you will most likely be drafting sometime Friday so contact Miller or I via PM and we will post your claim for you if you are going to be unavailable.
