This came to me a few days ago. I was bored and flipping through some latest comics and was wondering about this. And since I have never built a fan fiction site before I decided to bring it here.
For the new ones who don't know me , I wrote awhile here before the relaunch. No clue how that has went. I hope it went well.
Anyhow my idea was basically this. In reading DC's "Post Flashpoint" titles you get the sense its really an Ultimate DCU. A lot of the connections to the past are gone. Superman is younger , Batman never had Tim Drake as a sidekick and more.
Its really kinda sad that the old DC we followed is gone. That it won't come back and we won't get anymore stories from it. So I thought , well that kinda sucks ya know. Because I loved the old DCU.
So my mind thought... why does it have to end ? Why not get writers to actually follow and do new stories. With the DCU before Flashpoint ? To have fun and keep it going ?
You can write say Superman who is still married to Lois Lane and you can work a plot out to end the marriage in a way or whatever your hearts desire is . But for fun , keep the old numbering... like
Superman #715
Or do Batman .I personally would love to write Batman and continue it and logically work a storyline where Bruce and Dick work out how there is gonna be 1 Batman in Gotham again.
It maybe too much for this forum and admins to do. But I really would love to see how creative we can be and write the characters like they were still in the old DCU.
To see where we take the characters and what happens.

While it is an interesting proposal and if there were a site like that I might give it a look to see what people would do, it's not something that calls to me to write for it, and definitely not one I would want to admin or handle continuity for. It's hard enough keeping straight what a handful of writers here do let alone 70+ years of Pre-Flashpoint continuity, what is and ins't in continuity after each of the DCU events and each of the changes that each writer makes. That's the kind of logistical nightmare that sends me running away screaming.
As for this site, we just relaunched and I am not willing to abandon what we are doing to start all over again with a new direction, and I know form options thrown around during the reboot roundtables that the idea of having two different universes/continuities on the same site won't fly here. So if someone were starting a site with this premise, I would support it as a reader if I found stuff I liked there, but I don't see that happening here at this site.

Which is cool....I didn't say abandon the current work that everyone is doing. Just open more slots...like a regular DCU line here. I'm sure it would be easier continuity that you'd imagine. Because the ones writing here know the basics on how many Robin's there have been. How Superman is married and more. Because if you asked many to raise their hands , I could bet a lot are long time DCU fans before Flashpoint.
Not that I hate Flashpoint. I thought a new revamp line was nice for some things in DC's current product. Because god knows that Roy Harper needed a revamp to erase the whole hand cut off bull crap.
In the end it was a proposal. Nothing more....

I'm personally in love with this idea. anyone else? I would have sent this to you in PM Mezzaro but your PM keeps showing another name and I didn't know if you would get it. But thanks for liking the idea. And no I don't plan on doing a board to answer your question man. I don't have the time or the know how to do all that. But thanks for liking it.

There isn't really anything stopping you doing this when you claim a title, though. It seems unnecessarily complicated and would just cause confusion before everything is even fully up and running. It would be a logistical nightmare to be honest.

Eh, I am not exactly warm to the idea to be honest. Liquid and MRP already stated why.

The continuity really wouldn't be that bad for a few reasons. For starters, its only 25-ish years of continuity due to Crisis, and then it wouldn't be like a new writer is going to come on and start writing Batman as a teenager and have Robin as his mentor all along or something like that. The only time the continuity would come into play would be if there was a MASSIVE problem, like Barry getting erased from time or something.

The only time the continuity would come into play would be if there was a MASSIVE problem, like Barry getting erased from time or something. So what would be the point? You can do that anyway by claiming a title and in the first issue establishing they have been a hero for some time. All this idea would do is cause confusion.

While it's an interesting idea, it just doesn't fit here. The point of this site is to reinvent the characters and the DCU together. That's what this site is all about. If you want to continue the Pre-Flashpoint comic continuity that's fine, but this isn't the place for it.
And as was seen in our first try here, it's very easy for people to take on too much writing at once on one site alone. So I doubt many here would be so quick as to jump on doing a whole other universe and continuity at the same time.

Which is cool and I understand it. It was something on my mind and the only place that could do it was here. But I can understand the reasons not to.

To see what unique situations they could have went with down the line. Like the JSA ...how good could it have continued without being reset to Earth 2 ? It would have been an interesting thing to see.

You know one thought does occur to me though of your proposal as a possilbe universe wide event where Hypertime/whatever we wanna call it causes a visit from the Pre Flashpoint Universe? Just a thought.

Just a thought. Its what anyone really want. But your idea does sound really good. An event where you see the pre-Flashpoint DC characters interact and see a new world. The heroes of both Universes meet and at the end both go back.

Probably be a miniseries thing with kinda a round robin of titles thing? I mean it could be fun I suppose.

Not sure if this is the best board to discuss this, but why not...
I know its almost a been and done discussion, but I would like to bring up the future.
Reading through November's claims thread I saw that a proposed 'Atom' title was not accepted because of it being set in the future. I understand the argument, and especially after what happened with batman initially in the original UDCU, then the few that followed (including a joint Jonah Hex title I was kind of fond of). Anyway, I think the topic does warrant discussion.
Some points: -Titles are freely able to draw upon the past, and add and change whatever without much consequence (generally) to the greater universe. -It was mentioned that Legion would be accepted as a title because it's set in the future- but what about others, Kamandi the last boy, Batman Beyond, Rip Hunter... -As far as titles set in the future creating a set future or being disconnected from the present- what about time travel- something that is a constant motif in comics- doesn't that already create a future in some way?
An idea might be to a separate section for alternate future titles. Also maybe have them only be able to be claimed as second titles. I fully admit that I bring this up because I have ongoing idea for a future-set title (Legion-esque).
No shit-stirring, just wanted float the idea.

Jack ....in my proposal I sent I basically explained I picked Ray Palmer as the Atom , and that there is 2 others the current DCU could use in Ryan Choi and Adam Clay. I also picked a few characters as villains that no one was using . I admit I was wrong about Maxwell Lord and didn't realize he was listed under the L's .
I also picked a floating future proposal which was...the current UDCU would never see that future. That it was set ahead and that no ones work would be considered moot with it.
In fact my title was inspired by the Jonah Hex title you did here (I thought Buck did a few of them) and Kamandi. I wanted a unique twist on the concept and picked the Atom as that.
If anyone wanted a crossover , well we saw how it worked with Kamandi in the 1970's and 80's with Batman and Superman. Its easy to do and no ones work then was impacted by it. Kamandi was in its own world it seemed. That was the proposal with the Atom. It would have been a unique title. I would have done a lot of horror concepts in it that I plan. I post it at CBR for people to read by the way .

The way I see it is this-the mission statement of the site is to create a shared DC universe, where each of the writers uses the resources available to contribute to that shared universe. The resources available include the titles and characters in the DC catalog. The shared universe is what sets us apart from other fan fiction sites. It creates a number of headaches to be sure-claims, continuity, etc. all of which a writer has to take into consideration when creating their story with those characters in this setting.
Each time a character or title is used that doesn't contribute to the shared universe it dilutes the mission statement of the site and reduces the resources available to achieve said mission statement.
What I don't get is if you don't want to write as part of the shared universe, why take on all the limitations and headaches of claims, continuity, deadlines, not being able to use characters claimed by others, etc. It would be so much easier to tell those types of stories somewhere else where there is no shared universe.
Now one thing Miller and I had talked about when we were batting ideas around in the initial discussions of what to do with a reboot/relaunch was the Elseworlds line at DC. We both like some of the stories there but agreed that those types of stories diminished the shared universe if it took characters away from it. I really liked Liquidsword's Supergirl title in the last iteration of the site, but it did take characters away from the shared universe and gave nothing back to that universe. It still was a good read though. What we talked about possibly doing once we were up and running was doing an Elseworlds title that riffed off of Star's Dial H idea that never got off the ground.
Elseworlds would be a title that rotated writers allowing those interested to write short (3-4 part) arcs featuring different interpretations of the DC characters (alternate futures, characters in the past, switched identities, etc.) that were the staple of the Elseworlds line. It would be free from site continuity and not limited by existing claims. There would only be one title of this and one issue appearing each month so it would be a sidebar that didn't take away from the site's mission statement.
There would be some issues to iron out if we did this. Deadlines, eligibility, etc. Stepping on someone's toes might be an issue too hypothetically-say we had a regular Adam Strange title and someone did an Elseworlds Adam Strange that people liked much better, would it cause problems with the main Adam Strange writer, discourage, them, or whatever. There would be limits as to who could take an issue, the focus has to be on your main title (or titles) and if you cannot produce an issue of Elseworlds in addition to your main title (not instead of), in a month or for the duration of your arc, then you shouldn't take the reins of the Elseworlds title. Deadlines would be an issue as people are waiting for their turn and missing a deadline would be unacceptable because it would hold everyone else up.
Now, it is not a given that we would or even could do this, but I throw it out there to gauge interest levels. One of the admins would have to oversee the title and at this point that would probably wind up being me since I am bringing it up.
If people are interested I would say the following would be the minimum eligibility requirements:
1) writers would have to have to be eligible for a second title (i.e. have produced at least 6 issues of a title)
2) they cannot have missed any deadlines or asked for extensions on their title for at least 3 months (or whatever we decide)
3) issues are due 1 month (i.e. 30 days) after accepting writing reigns and each subsequent part is due within 30 days of the posting of the previous issue.
4) If you miss a deadline, your arc will be postponed and the next arc started, you will be added to end of the waiting list to finish your arc so others do not have to wait because of your deadline issues.
None of this is set in stone, and the title may be vaporware, but I am just gauging interest since it has come up in this thread.
