The actual rules might need to be updated on some of this. I can't remember the last time they were.
There are no inherent restrictions on time travel or AUs beyond "don't screw anyone over." Our 'discussion' on that subject a few months ago, while heated, generated enough solutions that we can deal with those kinds of storylines. Future storylines are just AUs until the present catches up with them, past stuff is mostly fine except major historical revision can be subject to review. The only rule with AUs is that one writer isn't allowed to define the *entire* multiverse. Well, you have to have the character claimed or have permission from the claim owner to use an AU or future version of said character, but that's it.
The reputation of being exclusive, while maybe true in the past, is something I'm personally convinced is not deserved today. Maybe the actual rules page needs to be updated, but when people here and elsewhere continually say the site's too exclusive and there's not enough writers, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I've also done away with any hard limit on extensions. As long as people find some way to contact me and say they're still interested in writing their respective title, I have no problem with people taking the time they need.
That being said, ASM has had its own problems in regards to other writers being screwed over and being exclusive. It's not something that's unique to this site. It's certainly something we want both sites to avoid, but a certain amount of rules are necessary. That being said, I'm always open to discuss rules civilly. I understand that it hasn't always been that way. I remember when, without naming names, an admin would go out of their way to add new rules to purposefully make one specific writer's title more difficult. But I've also seen disgruntled writers go out of their way to deliberately sabotage the site. Respect is a two way street. Everyone, including me, has been guilty of some offense or another on either side of the moderator / writer relationship.
So to reiterate...
Time travel = okay as long as no one's screwed over.
AU = okay as long as no one's screwed over.
Extensions = okay as long as the writer has enough of a presence to ask for one.
Reboots = as much as I *hate* reboots on a personal level, if enough people show interest I'll be happy to open up a new universe (without canceling the old one, so all four of our current writers aren't completely screwed.)
